Its entirely possible to be at peace with the goblins if worldgen rolls in your favour/disfavour. You can always piss them off manually and it may be that there is more than one goblin faction

I've heard about this happening before. on a youtube vid.
apparently war with the goblins started when a Human guest at the tavern ripped off a goblin dancers lower jaw,

Be warned this does not mean it will last, nor does it mean they won't decide to test your defenses in other ways.

Well now they're drinking in my tavern and I dont know how I should feel about this

Try allowing a goblin to live as a long-term resident in your fortress.

In a few years, they may petition for citizenship, and then you can have your very own goblin living among your dwarves.

This works with any race. I even had a Gorlak living in one of my forts once.

Gorlaks tend to be charismatic and well liked, expecially by dwarves its not such a stretch to see one integrate itself fully into society
