Dwarves aren't constructing workshops
Hi, been playing for a few hours and my dwarves won't build anymore workshops no matter what I do, I have the resources, I have the labour and I put them in places that are able to be reached but they won't build and the construction stays in 'Construction Inactive' state, its the same with farm plants made outside, nothing is getting built but everything that I've already built is working fine, they also mine without issue too, what's going on?

Are your dwarves busy doing things, or do they have "No job" as a task?

I think to build specific workshops, you need to have assigned specific jobs.

I don't remember building having a high priority overall, so if all your dorfs are busy with business (working in an actual workshop, planting, doing anything else or just being on break (for habitually more than two months in a row) because you don't have any alcohol left), they'll not put building in mind.

Same problem here, first few workshops went fine, but the still isn't getting build

One thing that can cause this - if there is a chunk of rock blocking where you want the workshop to go, and one dwarf is in the middle of coming to get that rock when the dwarf building the shop wants to move it out of the way, the job to build the shop will be suspended with a message about "object blocking tile". The problem rock gets cleared out quickly, but you need to tell the dwarves to try again to restart the building - "unsuspend" on either the panel that opens when you click the workshop, or the button with that label when you look at the job in the task list.

I'm stuck having this problem too, I have masons and carpenters doing nothing and basic workshops are not being built. Anyone find a fix?

Click on the construction site, is the build maybe suspended? It sometimes happens when Dwarfs and objects get in the way of each other.

If you have buildings not being built, the first thing you should always do is click on the building and make sure your dwarves didn't suspend the job. If they have, make sure to resume the construction. You can also find this information from the tasks menu (it will be a pause icon that is lit up, click those off).

If it hasn't been suspended and they still aren't building then you might have made it so there are no available builders through your labor menu. You need a carpenter to building the woodworking shop, mason to build the stoneworking shop etc. Now at the game start, you don't have any of those labor specified as a default, which means every dwarf will be these things. However, if you've created a filter for those labors, made it so only those selected do the job and don't have anyone selected (or the 1 person you did select is busy), then the job won't get done. Or, even if you don't have the filter on, but you've told all of your dwarves to only do jobs you've selected for them and none of them are a carpenter, then none of them will build a wood shop.

If the building isn't suspended, and you haven't messed up the labor designations, and you do have idle dwarves, then this might be a bug we need to report. I have seen reports about people designating a really large gathering zone and that makes their dwarves stop working for some reason. And to fix it, they've been creating a burrow, assigning all their dwarves to it, and then deleting the burrow. So give that a shot.

If its not suspended, not a labor issue, not a gathering zone issue, then this might be a brand new bug.

i had the same issue and i fixed it by going to (t)asks, where i could see my construction jobs as well as people with "No job", and removed the top most construction job (i think it was bugged). then they started doing the rest normally
The Mason job is the job that fixed this for me. It is next to the other stone jobs in the New Labor area. The Mason, from what I can tell, is just the Architect/Building Designer but with a new name. Assuming the job is related to stone. For farm plots, I dunno tbh.

i couldn't build a still till i had everyone assigned as something, the only one i didn't was the engraver, so i assigned an engraver.. then my exp leader started building the still.

makes no sense.

I’ve had this happen in every fortress I've played in premium Ed. Just worked out that I load up my first 2 workshops too much - while I only have 7 civs. So all the dwarves do half arsed make things and get miserable and hold meetings and stop all tasks. This means they don't build more workshops or do any digging or anything - which means I can't make a temple or tavern or still to make them happier and it all just stops and goes downhill.

Found this thread and paused all tasks I could find besides the critical ones, and make a new Labor profile which included everything except hauling stone/wood and fishing.. My dwarves always seem mad on fishing if able.

.. and voila the civs get back to fortressing.
Tldr; pause everything, let dwarfies figure it out.
