Accept the poor soil, your dwarfs will learn to live with it. It isn't actually -that- poor.
grow my plump helmets (:
I made a farm plot outside, I even made a tiny area for seed stock only. It has some seeds in it... How do I farm?
When I select the plot and go to different season tab I don't see any options there. I have looked at some videos and I see people can select different crops.
What could be wrong here? Could it be that no plants fit my biome? Do I need to assign someone? Is soil not viable?
Dwarven plants like plump helmets, cave wheat, and the like can't be grown above-ground.
If you don't see any choices at all in the farm plot (rather than choices you can't select because you have no seeds for that plant), you may have put the farm plot in a non-farmable biome. Mountains, Glaciers, and Ocean biomes have zero farmable plants native to them. If I had to guess, I'd suspect that your farm plot is in a mountain biome, especially if you are playing the tutorial embark.
At least in the previous version, the game wouldn't allow you to embark in an area with no valid farmland, but it is perfectly possible that the central area is mountain, and all the farmable grassland & such is over on the edge, or even just one corner. If you want to tell what biome an area is without plopping down a farm plot, one trick that works about 90% of the time is to look at the types of ground cover (grass, although most of them don't have that anywhere in the name), and check the wiki for the biomes those grasses are native to.
This might be it, I can visually see chalk sticking to the top layer too. I am not at home so can't check for more details.
So what do I do... Can I buy soil or set something up?
The easy answer is to farm Dwarven crops (plump helmets, sweet pods, etc.) underground. Underground farms don't care about the surface biome/weather/etc.
If you really want to farm surface plants, try a different spot on the surface. Look for the places that native plants (or grass at least) are already growing.
Okay, thank you, I will try it out once home!
I wanted my dwarves to have diverse diet :D.
