New to DF - Beginner friendliness and play styles
Heyo everyone,

I'd be completely new to DF
i once tried to play it but basically already got beaten by the start screen...

so i was wondering how "beginner friendly" the new Steam version is.

and as a second question, i read wildly differing things about DF
some say they basically just set up the world and then it's mostly simulation
some say they micromanage their billion of dwarves.

Is the way to play it really THAT different and you can do both
or is one of them a bit over exaggerated?

Thanks in advance and have fun playing!

I wouldn't say it was "Beginner friendly"...

But, if you like learning how to figure out games on your own, it's not that hard.

In my opinion, that's what makes a game more playable, is diving in without knowing what you're doing.

It took me years to learn how to play some of Paradox games, but, definitely got all my money's worth out of them, and will this game too.

Just playing myself after bouncing off it in the past. This has a basic tutorial and a good help section to make getting started a lot easier than in the past.

It's still a complicated sim game. You're gonna' need to spent some time with your nose in a wiki, but at least with this version you've got UI elements you can click that are more or less in line with what you'd expect from an, uh, game.

You can go to Kitfox Games (the publisher) youtube and they have some videos on there of a brand new person to the game learning to play it. "Let's Learn Dwarf Fortress Steam Edition".

As someone else brand new to the game, it convinced me it seemed beginner friendly enough now. Will be buying it later today probably.

Settle in an evil location for maximum mayhem.
I would recommend Nookrium's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEt87BikHzA . He is one of the OG DF Tutorial makers.

Once you get the hang of how combat works and how you're meant to deal with threats it's pretty straightforward.
