Does the game have an ascii mode?
On the store page they are selling the new "proper" graphics, but can you play the game in the originial ascii mode?

The classic version that you can download for free on the website will have the new UI in it's own style at some point so it's pretty much the ascii mode.

Doesn't look like that's currently available, but it's on the way. Hopefully soon, but, as someone who always hated playing with tiles, the graphics are nice.

Just note, it does not look like you can use the same save files between the Steam and Classic versions. So if you decide you want to switch back and forth, you won't be able to on the same save.

They're in the process of converting the new system back into ASCII-mode. They just couldn't finish it before the planned release date and they didn't want to delay the rest of the game just for that. They do plan on updating with that, though. In fact, I believe the plan was "a few weeks after launch" -- assuming there aren't so many problems encountered after launch that it takes up a lot of that time.

Not in the original ASCII mode, no. In versions older than 0.50 the game had proper terminal support (at least on Linux and Mac), using the PRINT_MODE:TEXT setting. It was even possible to play the game over SSH with this option. However, since 0.50 this setting no longer exists.

What you can get though is a rendering that mostly looks like the text-based display of those earlier versions. This mode can be enabled in the Video Settings. However, it's still rendered as graphics, does not work on the terminal, and most importantly, is optimized for mouse input.
