Why is it "dwarfs" instead of "dwarves" ?

Well, the proper spelling is dwarfs. Tolkien was the one who came up with the "dwarves" spelling.

sorry, both merriam webster and oxford dictionary say both dwarfs AND dwarves are correct english plural forms of the noun dwarf. yes, Tolkien popularized it, but he didnt invent it, so dwarves is perfectly fine.
