Of course, everyone likes to play in his native language. Alone because 1:1 translate also often makes no sense. That you have to discuss that every time... rather testifies to the inability to comprehend that !
Who has only a little bit with the stats dealt (or indie developers, publishers know) knows that more languages in GOOD! titles also bring extremely more sales figures.
and yes, even if many do not believe that... Germans in particular buy a lot and prefer to buy in their native language. In Eu comparison, the Germans are with or the best buyers...
i.e. German, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, French and more are minimum languages that a title should have nowadays (except English).
A 0815 Shooter of course not, but the more text of the do more also make more languages...
PS : who now thinks... But how do you know... read the (...) and understand the content and use google. thanks !
PPS : In addition, you can make it easier for the community to translate games themselves or offer incentives to do so or you stay stuck in the year 2000 and don't develop further !
Edit : and yes I am annoyed by the topic... on the one hand from the arrogance "then better learn english" and that people know zero the stats but have to have an "opinion" ... grrr
Wie heißt es so schön: Games as a service.
Gute Nacht!
Normaly I translate my posts in englisch, but not this one. You englisch speaking people
wrote, learn englisch to play the game. OK. so learn german to read my post!
PS
in Germany it calls englisch, not english! (For the nitpickers)
The issue is, as plenty have said in this thread already, that you'd need to heavily modify the game's code for things to work in another language. Since you wrote in German, I'll give examples in my native French.
In DF, an iron sword is not "iron sword", it's "iron"+"sword" ([MATERIAL] [WEAPON]). This way, if one of your dwarves ever makes an artifact sword out of capybara man bone, there's no need to have capybara man bone swords in the game, just change the [MATERIAL]. In French, we would say épée en fer for iron sword. But just translating the game, we would get fer épée.
There's plenty of similar issues. If your civilization is "The Crimson Trumpets", in French, it would become Les Trompettes Cramoisies. Notice already how Crimson and Trumpets swapped. But that's not the worst of it! For if your civilization was "The Crimson Trumpet", in French it would become La Trompette Cramoisie. The translations for the words "crimson" and even "the" have changed! That would mean making an entire new system for only a few language, because English is very simple and straightforward on that front and other languages (including German which is, I believe, even guiltier than French on that front).
One last example. You've got a dwarf. They're a tall dwarf. In English, depending on their gender, you would get "He is tall" or "She is tall". Quite simple, the word tall never changes, therefore the game doesn't even have to check the dwarf's gender. But in French, we would translate tall to grand for a male dwarf and to grande for a female dwarf.
The UI and the tutorials, as text that never changes, can be translated. Quite easily. We'll probably see mods for that soon enough. But the core of the game cannot be translated without a huge amount of work, lest you get a broken translation, despite every single word being translated correctly.
Wow where to even begin. first of all i want to congratulate you!
on being an huuuuuge hole that is attached to one's rear.
Why not improve your attitude? my dwarfs have fought 3 eyed demons with more manners and intelligence than you! Go back to the cave and century you belong to. Someone asking a question about localization IS NOT an open invitation to spread your anglocentrism. The next anti-social dwarf that migrates to my fortress is going to get your steam name as a nickname and be dropped into lava. Just to commemorate your awfulness.
Next time keep your f*cked up suggestions to yourself. First of all, this is NOT what you suggested. If you had said: "you would have an easier time learning english than changing the language DF is in" I would have said nothing and would have been right there with you. It is NOT what you said. Your inner self leaked through. Oops! Freudian slip! Instead your worldview aquifer flooded your words. And boy oh boy it ain't pretty. At best you are completely oblivious of your privilege and ignorant of your high horse. At worst, you are a racist scumbag. Either way someone needs to call you out.
you are not alone in thinking that.
The game's development is definitely substandard in this regard.
But if that's not a priority of a the devs, what can ya do.
My friend, You might speak english but you do not understand it very well.
If your game is made on some kind of engine that does not support translation, you are a fool.

it might not be ideal or a perfect translation. Some languages would be harder to do...
but if I can understand broken google translate text, a little wonky text in a game is totally fine. Not only that but "english grammar" can be translated to other languages. For instance: "IRON + SWORD" would be "IJZEREN + ZWAARD" in dutch. A perfect translation. French would be not be a perfect translation but it would be understandable. MUCH more understandable to someone who does not speak english at all. I rest my case.
