Planting trees has not been implemented. Trees do grow over time, but Dwarfs have no control over that right now.

You can make it more likely you get new trees by digging down several z-layers either from the surface (for surface trees) or underground, and if from the surface, roofing it over. I don't think they've added being able to farm directly such as by for instance planting nuts or seeds from the trees that produce them.

It takes a very long time.

Does that require very deep soil, or will trees grow on muddied stone?

Trees will grow on muddied stone but you're obviously better off not having to mess around with that, especially for large areas where a bucket brigade would be impractical. I think it takes a couple years game time for a tree to be even minimally harvestable and more if you want more than just one log.

It does take a long time, but unless you're constantly cutting down trees for the purposes of deforestation, eventually your site will end up completely saturated in trees. I've even seen this on desert embarks and it applies to cavern layers as well. It kind of sneaks up on you. One day you'll be scrounging for every last bit of lumber you can find, a few years later you find yourself in the middle of a saguaro jungle.

It also depends why you're growing trees at all. If you're growing them for fruit or nuts (or some other harvestable product if you've modded it in), you'll want to cut down all the pure wood trees as soon as possible to favor the product-producing trees.

You don't really need to care if it's just for wood, for instance if you're in some horrible biome where doing stuff like this is your only source.
