free or paid
I don't really care to be honest. if it is a paid game. I would buy it to just support the devs. :steamhappy:

The ASCII version is free (And you can then install a "tileset" for graphics for free)
https://bay12games.com/dwarves is the official page. Enjoy!

Steam version is HD though with minifeatures like stackable+ large 32x32 sprites, custom beard colors for customisation, modular artwork and a unique tileset + outsourced new music for the game.

The tileset used in this however isnt compatible with the 'original' you have on the bay12 forum from a technical + also legal standpoint, since this game is official dwarf fortress property can can't be redistributed.

I am more than happy to pay for DF with ACTUAL graphics and mouse support. Gnomoria was fun but I know this is better, I just couldn't stick to ascii and keyboard controls long enough.

Traditionally, Dwarf Fortress has only been available as a free download direct from the Bay 12 website. The Adams brothers say they’ve been offered large sums of money in the past for licensing deals, but the team has always subsisted on donations alone. It even made the move to Patreon in 2015. But, in today’s FAQ, the pair said that they’re selling this premium version in part to pay for health care for ailing family members.

“Dwarf Fortress is going premium because we want more people to encounter the game, grow the community,” Bay 12 wrote in the statement, and because “some of the creator’s close family members have developed serious health issues within the past 6 months, and money to support them is tight. As it’s a sensitive and difficult matter, please respect Tarn and Zach’s privacy about this, but keep some well wishes in your hearts for them.”

I'm 100% willing to pay for the game.

Does anyone know if (at least some of) the profits from this will go to Tarn and Zach?

80% from the Steam proceeds, so a pretty decent chunk. Bay12 more or less said that the Steam release is partly happening to finance family medical bills, so I'm sure they're happy with that cut.

there is no reason to believe the way it assigns RAM will change, so probably.
