find a big mountain, mine everything down until you have a 3 z high wall. Done

UP VOTE WHAT VISS VALDYR SAID

But you can also use wooden floors and stairs on the inside of the wall and deconstruct it once you have finished that z level. Think scaffolding (like in real life construction)

dig your base 3 z low

So much work haha, does building up/down stars along side my whole wall work?

Yup, that's called a scaffolding and pretty much the easiest way to do it!

That's a big ass wall from the in game perspective. I don't think there are any creatures in the whole game that can get over a two high wall without the use of some sort of equipment. What are you trying to keep out? lol

The best way to build walls though is to build up/down stairs along the area so your dwarfs can get to the upper part. Again, a three high wall is a tall structure and would require a lot of stairs and time to build.

Actually, that wall isn't tall enough. Especially if you aren't building it out of blocks. Most enemies that are worth dealing with, which is basically anything that can siege you, can climb a wall not made of blocks. They might overexert themselves while trying though.

What I do once I finish my first Z level high wall is make a constructed ramp at the end of each wall corner, and then designate the wall from the middle to the outside. That way dwarves won't get stuck on the "interior" of the wall with no way to get down without jumping.

After the second level is done, I construct an Up/Down stair adjacent to the ramp, and keep going up as high as I need with the Up/Down as neccesarily.

Also: mind trees. They may climb on them instead.

build 4 up/down stairs ontopo of eachother and let them build the wall layer for layer, dont start building a new layer when the previous one is not finished.
Take the stairs down, starting from the top, and you are done!

For fast building: make these stairs on the other end of the suppose-to-be wall sop they dont have to run the whole way.

Do it like how walls are erected in real life and build a scaffold, which you can then deconstruct (or not) afterwards.

Build your wall out of stone blocks. On the second level of stone blocks, carve out fortifications. Make sure you carve fortifications don't construct fortifications otherwise you won't be able to build on top of them. Carved fortifications include the floor tile for the z-level above them just like walls. I'd recommend you build the corners first. You should probably construct an adjoining floor and the same level as the fortifications otherwise you're going to need to lay down the wall blocks in order, one at a time. If you lay down a whole section of wall with no alternate routes to get to the tile Dwarves will build walls that block them from building the rest.

Don't build your walls out of wood or raw stone (raw stone takes forever to haul). Always use stone blocks.
