Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

Will This Be the End of the Lazy Newb Pack?
Hi.

I am a bit worried about this. I would really dislike seeing support for the Lazy Newb Pack disappear.

I can't play without it I'm afraid.

Free version still will be a thing. So there will be the newb pack still up and running. If not, there sure is somebody willing to take over

I hope so. I'll be picking up the steam version to support the dev, but playing this game without say Dwarf Therapist will just kill me.

What is required to change a dwarfs job is insane with the standard key setup.

Agreed.

I can guarantee you that all the utilities we currently use for Dwarf Fortress (soundsense & therapist being the most popular) will either be updated to support the Steam version, or completely integrated into it. Even if the original creators of these utilities do not update them - somebody else will.

Thank You.

There are so many utilities which are a must have for DF, and I'm very happy you chimed in.

Cheers.

Toady said that both versions will be compiled from the same codebase. That means that all utilities will work with both versions as soon as they will be updated. I'm 90% sure about it.

Cool.

I think making this "easier" to play by moving it to Steam will probably bring a ton of mods to the Workshop. Can't wait to see what happens once it's released.

My biggest concern is mod authors distributing solely through the workshop.

Learn to play with ascii!!!!! its best!!!

I agree, Ascii has a beauty all of it's own but try using the default key setup to do the simplest of chores such as changing the jobs of each dwarf is an experience I wish on no one.

If you haven't already done this give it a try. For myself it's a nightmare, and I have to say from my personal standpoint is why I raged quit the game before I came across the lazynewb pack, and all of it's utils which made the game much more enjoyable.

I do have to say that stepping away from Ascii does take away a lot of DF's charm. Ascii has always left you're imagination to fill in the landscape, and it's very much like playing a living breathing novel.

I believe it's not the graphics which halts some folks from trying it out, it's the nightmare of the key set which has to be addressed.

We have grown so use too right clicking on a figure/map option, and have a setup of choices appear which we can choose from.

If the modders who have proven their love for DF over the years (their work is outstanding) could work together to translate a working template to use the mouse as an alternate way to play the game more, and more people will join the ranks, and support the dev.

Cheers, take care.

the UI was allways this game's biggest drawback, LNP cured most of that and because of that Tarn probably never gave a damn about it, maybe it dying off like your fps in a 150 dwarf fort will force him to actually to something about it, my worry is stuff like masterworks dying...
