Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

[FOR BEGINNERS] Lazy Newb Pack
If you're new to the game DEFINETELY start with downloading Lazy Newb Pack INSTEAD of the standart version on the bay 12 games site. It has a lot of good addons and features that enhance the gameplay. Graphics and sounds included.

Dwarf Therapist and DFhack (that are included into Lazy Newb Pack) are highly recommended to use

I have 200+ hours in Elona, many hours in CDDA, but I find Dwarf Fortress control scheme too hard to remember, in the other ASCII games G is grab, Q is quaff, X examine etc but in DF its like press A+B+J to do this and that it just messes with my head :(
The links are not working.

12bay is looking for a new host. That's why most of it is down.

Well the graphics being one, but really I'm hoping for the controls to get a massive upgrade, with full on mouse support for everything. Tried the game out for over 50 hours or so a few years back, even with the tile sets, I just can't bring myself to continue because the controls are so user unfriendly for me.

It's a master piece content wise, but the UI is in the stone age...

And remember that losing is fun.
if you have to tell us what's fun and what's not, its probably not as fun as you think

either way gonna give it a go now, hopefully you're right lol
It's a reminder for the mindset that gets you the most fun out of the game, the ingame world just continues on and doesn't care for wether you're ready for something or not. Play the game to have an experience, not to "win"

it's just ASCII, once you get used to it it's very useful and some people even prefer it over other stuff
The more you play with ASCII, the more you appreciate it, becuase as there is no graphics - your brain starts using (or developing) imagination to imagine everything happening, which doesn't happen as much with regular tilesets

I like no graphics because its much easier to mod in whatever you want, without having pixel art skills.
Currently layering animal people. It is a lot of work to make 1 civ's sprites fully. So worth it though.
