SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated

This game doesn't feel at all like the original
I've only completed a couple levels but already I can tell they didn't polish the mechanics, The only things that feel right are the jumping, the attacking and the ground pound. The bubble bash is stiff, and so is wall jumping, jumping off moving platforms practically cancels your first jump, The sponge Ball stops on a dime and doesn't slide at all, the section where you jump off a boat over a gap in downtown bikini bottom relies on collision magnetism to work only 50% of the time, the whole mechanic now feels scripted rather than having any weight or physics to it.

Patrick's throw fruit is similarly magnetized to platforms rather than following a consistent arc, and the lock-on which is supposed to be the consistent aspect of the mechanic is inconsistent, sometimes you have to walk to the very edge of a cliff or hazard to get the lock on to function, sometimes it just bounces off a locked-on target anyway. Hitting enemies into other enemies in order to kill both often doesn't work, sliding sections cancel your momentum the moment you leave the ramp, the bungee jumping is practically unplayable, the camera is bugged and boosting down is inconsistent.

I haven't gotten to Sandy yet, but if you have, is that similarly messed up?

It's so close to being good, but right now it just feels incomplete, some of these issues aren't too bad, but I feel like they'll have to redo the Sponge Ball entirely if they want it in any way to resemble the original.

I don't remember but could you use the bubble bash in mid air? Like Jump and then bubble bash? You can here, and I don't remember being able to do that in the original either. Not that it's a big deal, it's just strange that some things are apparently changed intentionally and others just go for some kind of weird inferior imitation.

It is a remake hence they improved on some bad (for todays standards) design decitions of the original..
faster attacks (due to double framerate aswell as better animations) and midair attacks are just a few of the improements

didnt feel sluggish for me at all.. but i havnt played the original recently

I don't think that cancelling your jumps or completely removing all physics from the Spongeball is really an improvement. You could argue that the throw fruit being more scripted helps with more frustrating sections and the walljump and bubble bash are kinda subjective as to how you feel about the animations.

It's a mixed bag, I think they did an amazing job with jumping, movement and smashing tikis but everything else feels off, off in a bad way.
I'm actually putting together a list of changes I notice during gameplay, a lot of this stuff included, so I can post it for returning players to look at while they consider picking up the remake. I actually didn't know about mid air bubble bashing, but I'll add it to the list. Good things to know.
I can't put my finger on the specifics, but Spongebob controls a bit... stiff and sluggish. It's not a night and day difference, but as someone who's beaten the original several times throughout the years, it definitely feels off.
