Burning Questions Before Game Release
Hey people,

We're only one week away from this game coming out and it seems there's still some questions I'd really like to have answers to. Questions that other people have asked but which THQ has seemingly ignored on Twitter and YouTube so far.

I can't find any dedicated forums for this game and all of its versions so I'm posting on the Steam forums. I asked one of these questions on the general SpongeBob reddit and that doesn't seem too active either. Anyway, here goes:

Physical PC Release, Which Platform?

This is what I'd like to know most of all before purchasing the games. There are four possibilities that I can think of:

  1. No platform, stand-alone game on DVD/Blu-Ray (this means no achievements and no play time tracking)
  2. Download code for download from THQ servers? (I guess this one is unlikely. Would also mean no achievements)
  3. Key for downloading from Steam
  4. Key for downloading from GOG (DRM-free)

Will It Have DRM?

We at least know for sure that the GOG version will have no DRM since GOG doesn't allow DRM on their platform. It's possible that they will use Steam's built-in DRM and if the physical PC release uses only the disk then it's possible they will use disk-check DRM like on consoles. But it's also entirely possible that none of the PC releases (both digital and physical) will contain any DRM whatsoever.

On second thought, since according to statistics many people don't buy disk drives for their computers anymore, I would assume it's highly unlikely the physical release will ship with no download codes whatsoever. And with that, disk-based DRM is likely out of the question as well.

What About Cross-Platform Multiplayer?

We know it'll have online multiplayer, but as is sadly often the case with Steam and GOG games, they make use of their respective store's services but forget that GOG's online services are open and can easily be used to connect Steam and GOG players together. Direct connections via LAN are also an option.

So the question is, will Steam and GOG players be able to play together? What about standalone versions, if that is what the physical PC version is?

Question of mega unlikeliness: Will there be PC-console crossplay? (Yeah, I didn't think so.)

Of course, we will know once the game releases but then it'll be too late to get the pre-order discount. Please, if anyone has managed to squeeze this info out of THQ Nordic, let me know.

I saw somewhere here, I'm sure you can find it easily by searching discussions, that physical copies will come with a Steam key

Not sure about cross-platform
I searched and I found one post asking if the physical release will include a Steam key, and a moderator/developer(?) said yes. But no mention of it also containing a DRM-free version of the game on disk.
