Question re: Custom Maps on Steam vs. GOG

I assume Steam has Workshop maps that otherwise don't work on other versions of the game, but how is the off-Steam custom mapping community for this game? I love mapping for games, and am interested in getting the GOG version so I can install anytime anywhere, but don't want to get it IF the mapping community outside of steam is lacking players. Thoughts?

All of the platforms have the same levels. We do not use Steam workshop, but our own independent workshop that is easy to access across any platform.
