Yes there is. It is not a really complex story but it is enough to give you a reason to explore the world.
Funny you should say that about the game, when a friend of mine and me spent about 4 hours ingame just yesterday, and we never went through anything like that. So it has to be something with your computer, not the game itself.
the developers literally said that the story is currently in the works and IS NOT implemented into the games builds anywhere.
going biome hunting to unlock craftables is NOT a game story.
a game story is finding out why you were shrunk, and what to do now that you are shrunk like how to possibly reverse it or rescue the scientists that were doing the shrinking so that you can progress in something other than unlockables.
seriously ppl, stop saying this game has a story when the devs themselves have stated it does not in its current form.
also: story missions would more than likely do more than just unlock a crafting recipe for you, they would probably give you actual items you can use in the game to further progress the story like certain items that you can't craft yourself but actually need to progress to obtain.
in game stories, these are called "key items" and so far the closest thing to those are the password segments you have to collect from the jungle biome, and even then they're literally only for one thing, finishing a burgl sidequest.
and yes, burgle chips are sidequests, exploring the biomes has NOTHING to do with the story and only provides lore which again, isn't story.
story and lore are not the same thing, one is just information that has no real role in the game and the other is actually something you can progress through.
imagine saying that harry potters lightning mark being put on his forehead was the story of harry potter.
It wouldn't be like Spiderman but close enough
Spider Mutation: Spiderman
This is an open world survival game. It rewards the player by exploring. Picking up notes and record tapes is the story. You piece them together and this develops a story based on past events. So if you don't like this approach then there are other games out there with a more story driven system. You might not find that here.
As far as this games story being finished, it's still in Early Access. So no its not done. I have no ETA on it, but I imagine when Official Release hits it most likely will be done.
Aside from this there is tons of new content. Not just into the woods, but since its first months they've added so much to make the game experience much richer.
Let's hope to have some more information about this for 1.0!
i see NOTHING about story or anything other than just base building.
it kinda depresses me to think that at one point they were very active on here in how they told us what was coming up, yet now there's nothing to actually see other than a 3 month old post where people are speculating on what's coming up.
honestly i don't care about base defense as it is right now, i want something to actually get interested in so when im playing the game features like base defense are actually just side missions.
rn this is all we're gonna be doing: base building and unlocking more base building to defend against bugs.
yeah, after a couple nights tell me you're not bored and looking for another game.
