SCA.B Scanner Research?

I bought something using Science (forgot the name) for searching for SCA.Bies. I want to use it to find them but I don't know how.
I tried looking for a mutation, nope
I tried using the scanner at field stations, nope
After finding one and before I picked it up, I randomly clicked around on everything to see if anything would show that it's right there as a scan, nope
I don't get how this thing, that cost a decent amount, even works.

EDIT: I tried googling this the past few days before posting here and the only thing google wants to show me is exactly where each SCA.B is, not how to use this specific SCA.B scanner

The scanner activates automatically.
Its the little thing in the bottom left that pops out and makes a ping sound when something is nearby. In the beginning it does it only for science stations, when you buy upgrades it also shows other stuff (like SCA.Bs) with a different symbol

It activates automatically, although if you buy other upgrades too (There's also for Milk Molars and Raw Science) and they're close by each other, it will activate for one that is closer
