From what I understand it doesn't apply a DoT it just does damage in a small AoE as your shots land, so you'll likely want to ensure you aim to hit. I haven't utilised it much myself but I think black ox armour with the quickcharge effect and a quick charge trinket might help it fire faster( I have not tested this), also the Whittle wizard mutation DOES give the stamina improvement effect but nothing else.
EDIT; reading a bit more it's possible the fire ant armour may be able to augment the damage it does, and at least one source suggests the damage can bypass enemy defense. it's suggested that the staff might do well against bosses.
Though the link may be correct, saying it is the burning damage type, the symbol is different for burning type damages then the in game indicator on the Ant Queen Staff.
This is what the image looks like:

Now you may be able to understand why my curiosity has increased, it does not match any other type on the wiki including the burning type damage. I started to think it might be some strange comb but other weapons, such as the Spicy Coaltana, clearly have two types on their info panel. Likewise, it is not associated with the other ant tools like the scepter, which has the symbol for generic damage.
Would be nice to have some specificity in regards to this.....
Okay, thank you all for the input.
