All you're missing out on is the raid mechanic, and that's assuming you never build any smaller outposts anywhere else on the map, as the raids trigger on whatever 'base' you are closest to, not just only your main base.
I personally have built smaller outposts with zipline towers at several locations around the game (Sandbox, Birdbath/Hedge, Woodpile, Oak Tree, and a few others) and have had raids trigger at those, so if you eventually add more such locations in your game you'll still see the raid part of the game.
I have a outpost built on a lily pad right above the Pond Lab hatch as well, it's a really good location and very safe.
You're not really missing out on much.
Even leaving that aside you can get all the raids you want doing mix.r's and using the waft emitter, so there's really no point putting your base somewhere easily raidable.
You'll probably be glad you did it after you've done a couple raids, they're mostly just tedious.
If you want to have the experience, build a mini base on the shoreline, nothing to fancy, the bugs just need to attack some walls and maybe a chest lol.
