I’ve played through the game a few times now I have built on top of the baseball before and it’s good to stop ants raiding your storage chests and no bugs can currently get up there but I now prefer to build on the lily pads by the drink carton by the oak tree again nothing can get down there and seeing as you need to goto the oak lab from time to time I just find it best to build close to it

Actually i was playing today, Friends and i had just moved to a lily pad by the juice box, Furthest large one out, A wolf spider jumped down the cliff and hopped lily pad to lily pad and attacked us, It died when it jumped a little too hard and fell in the water, So.

Lily pads no longer safe it seems.

Edit: It was not aggro'd beforehand, It just kinda came down on its own.

Building on the west shore of the toad swamp isn't a bad place either. It's not far from the oak tree and sets you up for the visit into the hedge nicely. There's a few places where virtually no hostile bugs roam, too.

Frankly, just avoid building anywhere near ants. It's a massive headache dealing with the swarms of them your chests will attract and, despite trying everything suggested to prevent it - I always end up with a dozen of them making clicking and chewing noises nearby. Drives me nuts.

Anywhere around or on the oak tree would be my suggestion. My personal favorite is the big root right behind the lamp.

It has all the good early game resources (most importantly acorns, which are great for food and building materials), it's a central location to pretty much everywhere in the backyard and there's enough aphids, weevils and water around it to make early game food management much easier too.

The only thing you should do is wall in the wolf spiders, though that's easy now that they're guaranteed to sleep the first two days.

The safest place to build a base is on the cliff overlooking the Enbiggener and outpost. It rarely has dangerous bugs nearby at night. It can only be attacked from one direction, if you make it 2 stories, you can see the entire yard easily.

It's location is fairly central to the yard and you are a short walk from several important locations that you will farm a lot throughout the game, such as the oaktree and hedge.

There is a spot right behind the mint box which is near the mystery machine. I started there this time. There are tall rocks on one side, the mint box on another and all I have to do is place a few grass walls and im good. I'm fairly practical with my bases as I just want to have a variety of resources nearby.

Its close to some, sap, clay, clovers, pebbles, sprigs, weedevils will walk up to the mushrooms nearby, aphids, and occasional crow feathers. The first field station isn't too far away. There are several weed stems within range and fairly close to a juice box and water droplets at the top of grass stems. Its on the ground and at night the wolf spider will prowl in the area, but as long as you can't see you behind the walls you've made your good.

A little farther away is orb weavers and ant hill to the NW. To the east a fair bit is a root to place sap collectors.

I've gone beyond huddled in a corner where my lean-to is and built a larger base there with just enough space for storage, crafting, and ziplines, but mainly focused on story progression and unlocking everything again. building little nomad outposts where needed.

I'll eventually relocate to a larger base on the rock near the frankenstein etch-a-sketch which is east of the uppyard ascend POI.

i built my first base in an underground tunnel near the stepping stones, but there IS a bombardier beetle that wanders nearby so if you don't know how to deal with those that might be a pain of a place to build :P

but i like to build in hidden, sneaky areas rather than giant houses in the open haha, so i've been looking for nice hidey hole base spots

build stairs up into the oak tree and build a literal tree house all the way around it. you can keep going higher as needed and eventually make zip lines that reach out to and can come back from most major places in the yard. it may not be the most original idea, but given how many different resources there are and how spread out they are, multiple bases, or a tall one with a zip line network is probably going to be the most viable the more the game goes on.
