According to the wiki, ladybug armor is tier 2 while antlion armor is tier 3. Antlion armor should be better.

Edit: Though antlion armor has a higher Defense number, it has a lower Resistance number. Both Defense and Resistance lower damage.

It’s also worth noting that while Antlion armor is higher tier armor it’s set bonus doesn’t really do much and is arguably one of the weakest armors in terms of combat buffs it provides (outside of the sandbox that is).

What weapons do benefit from its set buff, anyway?

Technically the only weapon it buffs is bows/cbows. Will copy the text from the Quickdraw set ability from the wiki

"Increases bow and crossbow reload speed by 40% for 3 seconds when attacking with ranged weapons. Reduces melee damage by 90% for 3 seconds."

The main reason I use the armor is for the Sizzle Protection it offers which, at that point in the game, is very much needed. Even now on my Whoa! difficulty run I'm still using this armor even at end game just because none of the other sets have felt worth crafting to me and it's nice being able to ignore sizzle. I consider it a decent general use T3 armor set.

On my 1st run I switched from ladybug to antlion armor for sizzle protection, which is very needed in the sandbox and just MANDATORY to collect charcoal (and very useful when fighting off Ladybug larvae to get the Coaltana, as well).
I then felt happy enough with antlion until I could upgrade to roly poly, which took a lot of time before I could get enough lint rope.
Then, once you get (and upgrade) roly poly, you're basically a walking tank.

The way I read the wiki for Roly Poly armor is that it buffs blocks, not perfect blocks. As someone who relys on perfect blocks something that buffs normal blocks isn't worth it to me. I am curious if the block stun from the armor applies to perfect blocks, that will determine if it is worth crafting for me.

If you can reliably perfect parry, you may want to go with the koi scale armor, whose bonuses are optimised for that. It's still a tier II though, you may want to upgrade to a tier III set sooner or later.

Your fighting style may eventually fit well with the Mantis armor for maximum crit chance and damage output, but in the meantime you may possibly appreciate black ox armor, whose bonuses revolve around charged attacks. Or fire ant armor for its acid buffs.

Oh, also, you may consider roly poly armor and red ant shield for a trip to the termites den. Things tend to become, well, "messy" in there, so you may want to afford tanking some hits.

I would have thought the block stun would apply to all blocks, but I would never be able to deliberately find out since I've never been able to intentionally achieve anything with stun.

Though Roly Poly armor, like Acorn armor, dedicates its set bonus to a co-op only benefit, so that side is even less helpful than the antlion armor.

Yeah, the Resistance is set by the type of armor, totaling 10%, 20%, and 30% for Light, Medium, and Heavy Armor, respectively. Aside from that the base defense points are based on the tier. So, yeah, Antlion Armor is an early Tier 3 set(highest base defense points) and Medium Armor, meaning only 10% Resistance separates it from the most protective armors in the game.

I still like Ladybug Armor for the healing, at least until you max out the healing received molars.

The Sizzle protection is amazing, but niche. Quickdraw is fun if you like Crossbows, and is a very noticeable increase in reload speed, but you more or less need an enemy to have aggroed on you to receive the benefit. In the best cases you lure two bugs into fighting each other as you dodge one of them and then enjoy the boosted fire rate as you whittle down the stronger bug.

Or, of course, if you're in co-op you have a tank in Roly Poly (or even Acorn) armor holding aggro while you perforate the threat.

There's a bunch of stuff that doesn't quite work out the same solo.
