Building material Progression and base defence?
Is it me or is the building material desigend in a rather bad way?

I started building with very limited options - not even round floor etc. and started building. This limited the building a lot - then later i got round floors etc. - and now later on i will get mushroom walls etc. - but to be honest it feels awful knowing the building material you actually want to use is locked - and mushroom walls seem to be locked pretty much at the end of the game? Ash blocks seem to be even later in the game. So i now have a main base that isnt actually what i want but there isnt really a point to build a completely new base at the end of the game?

I seriously do wonder isnt it a rather weird design decision to lock basic building materials to when the game is almost finished and when players have already built their base?

The next thing that really seems weird is attacks on the players base - ive got one base in a tree and one on the big flat stone - both bases are pretty much immune to enemy attacks since pathfinding doesnt seem to work and none of the enemies are able to jump. Do i have to build my base on the ground to not break those mechanics?

As you have discovered, you can build your base in a location where ground enemies can't reach you. You will have to build a base on the ground if you want to deal with those attacks.

However, you can be attacked by flying enemies (bees or mosquitoes) as well.

Progression can seem a little odd, especially near the ending. It almost feels incomplete over it even though it isn't, you just get so much near the ending that it seems like you should have more time and reason to actually use it afterwards and for the most part, you kind of don't. Not unless you are playing at a very slow and casual pace with a tendency to hoard resources (which admittedly are common habits in survival games).

If your base is high up and the ground raids can't reach it, then you might not actually need to redesign it as long as you don't anger the flying factions (bees/mosquitos). The pathfinding really isn't great, even with improvements like the spiders sometimes broken jump. If a raid can't reach you and you don't defend, it counts as failing the defense but that doesnt actually matter much overall if they couldnt damage anything either. It doesn't necessarily hurt to redesign either though. My first/main base in my current game is on the ground near the first science station you encounter by the baseball. Nowadays the station is even included inside my palisade walls. Haven't really had any issue with the ground raids since i added those palisades, but i still tore down and redesigned my base from a 2 story grass/stem design to a 3 story mushroom design because my needs had changed over the course of the game to. I needed more room mostly, and more storage (and the storage I kept on the second floor for quick deposits from anywhere else inside the base). Redesigned it so most my crafting is floor 1, the storage and bed are floor 2, and floor 3 is mostly food stuff so ants can raid my stuff since im near the red anthill. It's ultimately up to you to decide whether the effort is actually worth it though. If raids arent giving you an issue and your base design still works for you then maybe not. But it may also be worth strengthening your base before you do something like anger mosquitos by accident by simply hanging out in their territory too much or something.

I agree it is strange, but I think I understand what they are after. Higher tier materials are only available with access to higher tier bugs. In theory you should only need higher tier materials later in game and then you can take advantage of the easy upgrade tool they provided to give your original design extra strength and a fresh look.

What I don't get is multi level and curved pieces being locked up.

early game should be simple. simple building, simple survival. later you can make a base more suited to the places you will be going. upper yard, and such.
