I came here to ask this same thing, although I wanted to know how to share a world since I see no option to do so (and have never used the feature before so I'm unfamiliar with it).

I already gave it back. a game that has no working multiplayer or dedicated server, is useless for me and my friends

Some features are only available if you are connected to the microsoft servers, have you skipped that?

As Oceon said you need to enable crossplay and log in to the MS servers first. Go into your options and turn crossplay on or turn it on from the main screen when the game first boots up, I get a prompt to hit L to turn crossplay on at the bottom right of that screen.

If you're having issues with cross play (which seems to be required for "shared worlds" to function) then you can check this post as it's got some helpful info: https://grounded.obsidian.net/cross-platform-support

Keep in mind that sometimes online servers aren't accessible for whatever reason and if you're trying to play during server maintenance or when the server may be offline for some other reason you won't be able to access shared worlds.

Nothing to be sad about, you chose to refund and play something else instead of reading up on how the multiplayer and shared worlds features work and following the instructions in the link I provided above. You can come back and give the game a try any time you like.

when I buy a game that offers multiplayer, I expect it to work. it didn´t as in all other games. So it is not the game anymore I would like to play. it´s off my wislist now as well.

But it works. Players not doing things properly to set up multiplayer, cross play, and shared worlds doesn't mean that it doesn't work... that just means the problem exists between the chair and keyboard (PEBCAK).

I have a problem

I bought the game new and played it for over 4 hours, farmed a lot of resources and now wanted to continue playing the next day but everything was in my inventory
are gone or deleted !?
All you need is to enable crossplay and you need a MS account for that. You can then create a copy of your standard world and convert it to shared and invite friends, the catch is everyone has to have the MS account/XBOX account so they need to be your friend on there to be able to invite them.

In short
Option Host Required? Microsoft Account Needed?
Standard Multiplayer ✅ (host must be online) ❌ (just Steam is fine)
Shared World ❌ (anyone can host) ✅ (everyone needs MS account)
