Might I suggest a dip in the Pond, or just a long soak in your Hot Tub? :D
I'm having a similar issue though with the red ants. I befriended them and got tier 1 of antbassador, but they still attack me on sight if I'm not in red ant armor.
I remember a youtube vid mentioning you needed to leave the hill entirely before the perk would take effect. Have you tried that yet? Going a bit away from red ants (say, back to the baseball area) re-equipping, and trying again?
I haven't, but that is such a weird stipulation... I'll have to test it again next time I boot up.
Idk, maybe it's something weird like you need to be outside of the faction's "area" before the perk is equipped for it to work. Hoping for a patch from them soon for some of the stuff.
From the wording of it, I had assumed that befriending a queen alone would turn all her kin neutral to you regardless of the mutation, so said mutation would be useful in the next NG+ before you could befriend queens again.
It's in the mutation tab after all and none of those are passive buffs. They have to be equipped before they actually do anything.
It would definitely make NG+ easier dealing with more powerful enemies and essentially being able to ignore ants (especially fire ants, so sick of every worker aggroing on me). I am not sure how the mutation applies if the ants are infected though.
I'm not sure if it was leaving the area, or saving and quitting, then booting it up again, but something did fix the issue, and now the red soldiers are passive toward me with the mutation equipped like they should be.
