It's more a matter of pets "falling through the map" than actually wandering off.
It is especially bad along the rim of the sandbox, but can happen anywhere on the map.
The only way to recover your pet is with a recent save, otherwise it's gone forever.
Keep an eye on your pet (sounds, buffs, or visual confirmation) to see if it's still with you,
then just restore a recent save if you even need to recover your pet (and it's backpack).
It's also a good idea to keep your pets Happy (Pats and frequent Food), but AFAIK they will not wander off even if they remain Sad for an extended period of time.
Yeah, they did say that in the new patch notes for 1.4.
But, I haven't had a reason (yet) to try it out - none of my 3 pets have disappeared so far...
Only way i managed to stop my pet from disappearing was to open the chest clockwise then hurry to shore, save and reload, then my pet didn't despawn.
