If you think about it, the launch of 1.4 update was already a mess, no way it was properly tested / balanced before the launch day (as follow up minor patch had insane amount of balance tweaks, over ~50 at once). That could possibly be one of indicators that there was a serious lack of time / man power to make things ready in time.
Just a wild guess tho.
(Edit: You have to run when using staves because they don't allow you to block cancel like literally every other weapon- thus making them clunky deathtraps)
I don't see how that is possible. Are you in light armor with no health and no upgrades or naked?
Otherwise I die in like 4 hits with Roly Poly maxed out armour in NG+1- not an issue in one on one battles, but during defence events it feels like I own a tumour instead of battle armour.
Just some thoughts: The sour element is top tier damage, so I guess that makes sense. If you perfect block they can't get off their bonus attack or, you could cheese if you have to. There are other ways, especially with roly polys, you can attack them while running around them and they will never get a hit off. If you add stun and speed to your arsenal, it makes this even easier. The black ox beetle makes this harder to do this on, of the big slow bugs, because they have their aoe attack but it's possible, same as the green shield bug. You can also get bugs fighting each other, though not the roly poly because I don't believe they take damage from other bugs.
I think the very nature of having a plus tier game, is to cause the player to use creativity and skill to go further. Which will obviously be the hardest when it comes to bosses because you have a set arena. They have kind of always had a unique viewpoint with gear in general though. For instance, in the normal game the last gear you get is explosive but all the bosses have explosion resistance. Just weird, if you ask me.
To conclude, I wish there was better armor. I like to get the to point where I am so strong that I laugh as I kill the things that used to be difficult. But, you pick your own poison as a developer I guess. And, all the materials are there to allow us to upgrade, it wouldn't have to be a new big patch. *Shrugs*
