I kinda early accessed the upper yard by building stairs. I got there before the black ant lab, so I grabbed a lot of stuff a bit early.
(what a fantastic game!)
You are going to need termite soldiers parts. The easiest way to get them is by approaching their nest, the wood pile in the northwest corner of the map, without entering it.
That zone is relatively safe for being upper yard. As long as you stay on the surface and DON'T walk down or fall into the canyons, you can walk all the way there from the stone wall without encountering major bugs, with the main threat being occasional ladybird larvae burrowing out of the ground (if you haven't met them yet, they're basically normal larvae but on steroids).
Once you are in the area between the bicycle and the wood pile, you will meet wandering termites, mostly workers but iirc there should be occasional soldiers once in a while. That's the best zone to get termite parts early, because you can usually take on them 1v1 without aggroing multiple at once.
The termite axe will both allow you to break through a few locked passages, and work effectively in battle until you unlock better unique weapons.
