Any way to restore missing pet?

I had a pet aphid (playing on normal, where pets are now set to "can't die" by default) in a shared multiplayer game and it has suddenly disappeared along with everything I had in its inventory (upgraded ant-lion set, swimming gear, some situational trinkets). Unfortunately by the time I noticed it there were no backup saves old enough to still have her. I'm not sure if I had died or something, but previously when I died I could see her icon on the map and go get her.

I loaded up the save file in notepad++ and searched for her name (April) in the save data, and did not find it. I did find the name of my weevil in the pet house (Wendy), which makes me think she is truly gone, though I guess it's possible pets in pet houses are stored differently in the save data.

Has anyone else had a pet go completely missing and found a way to restore them?

Nope, your pet is now living it's best life in the backyard of a nice farm somewhere...

Pets get "lost" by falling through the map, and then are unable to find their way back.
It's a common thing, and there are several message threads similar to yours.

As far as I know, restoring an old save is the only way to recover a lost pet.

Man, what a bummer. Unfortunately none of the backup saves were old enough to still have her by the time I noticed. I didn't have anything irreplaceable on her but I did have a bunch of heavily upgraded armor for niche situations (antlion outfit for sizzle, bubble helm and fins plus, gas mask, aphid slippers...)

when you unlock mushroom bricks you can built a pethouse and leave it there

You haven't really gotten mad enough at your pet, until the ants trying to get to him take out a multi-story zip line tower while you're on the highest level messing with inventory. Grrrr...

OR (almost killed him for this), when you're on a twig hunting Wolf Spiders with your bow at night, and your pet walks under you (at ground level, not on the twig, mind you) and bumps you off your twig and into the waiting mouths of 2-3 very pissed off Wolf Spiders.
I screamed like a little girl and died horribly - no shame :P.

You can either:
* (Temporarily) Increase the difficulty level so your pet loses it's immunity (and dies), or
* Walk around the sandbox lip (where it can fall through the map easily), until he's gone.

i've never had my aphid go and dissapear. the worst i got was when i get my aphid stuck inside the ground where i manage each time to get her back either by baiting her with food or clipping myself do be able to interact with her. when i didn't see her icon it meant that she was waiting for me at her pethouse.

Same thing happened to my aphid, Quick. Little guy had my Thor's pendant on him and it was too late when I realised he was gone. R.I.P my completionist run I guess.

Ugh, it just happened again. Is there a save editor for this game or a way to enable cheats on an in-progress shared world? I need to give myself a bunch of raw science to dupe upgrade materials for all the gear I just lost AGAIN.

I'm having no luck with cheatengine.

ESC for Pause Menu -> Game Repair -> Recover Pets...

However my Fire Ant has disappeared with a bunch of important stuff in his inventory and recovering pets does nothing, I'm not on a hard enough difficulty for him to be dead so I don't really know what to do

Yup. Did both normal game and custom, pets just disappear. I have a feeling they are falling through the map. So many items are falling through the map, mobs spawning in objects and unable to get out. In the wasp box, had termites shooting through the floor. And for the many people saying to do "game repair" everyone who has had this happen knows this does not work.

Edit: I will say, I heard a lot of report that you couldn't go back to the ant queens to get your pet back. Well, I got mine back that way after it was lost. This doesn't replace the items that were in its inventory, nor the weevil we lost. Whatever is going on with this need to change. if it's the "happy function" you need to be able to turn that junk off in a custom game and their needs to be warnings.

In the menu, under game repair, there is a "recover pets" option.
