But since we have gunpowder, something like a flintlock gun may possibly fit as a late game ranged weapon.
Except, late in the game there's already so many ranged options dealing all kinds of damage (kinetic, splash, elemental etc.), that an actual gun may not even be necessary.
Maybe it could find a niche as some sort of "big game" hunting rifle. Cumbersome, very slow to reload, scarcity of ammo due to rare materials, but it one-shots most creatures, and those who survive a hit still lose a huge chunk of health and get stunned. So it is useful to either shoot down one or two mobs quickly when facing multiple enemies, or to weaken boss-like creatures.
It shoots a pebble (tier I), a Smooth Pebble (pebble+bug acid [tier II], or a Metal Slug (two rust and a smooth pebble [tier III] baked in the oven).
Damage is slightly less that corresponding tier bows, but faster rate of fire and ammo is literally laying all around us. We could even make more specialty ammo, like the turret has, by making Sticky, Splody, Gassy, Pokey, Burny, Smokey (Pollen), Minty, Salty, Puckery (sour), Sickly (Poison) and Deadly (Venom).
There, the hard part is done - dev team, update after next. Get to it. Everyone will appreciate it!
And if anyone's feeling really daring, a new Tier III Weapon - The Atlatl
Crafted from 2 stems, a bug rubber, a lint rope, and a Twinkling Shell, this hucks spears as ammo - with considerably more range and force than your tiny arms could ever muster.
And finally, for base, (super)Mix.R and Javamatic defense, going all the way back to ancient China for this one - the Hwacha. Crafted from 8 Pine Cone pieces, 12 lint ropes, 12 gunpowder, this one-shot wonder is finally loaded with a dozen Spears of whichever Tiers you wish to load it with, and when Activated, hucks all 12 with a bit more force than max-level Javelineer, and at considerably more range, where it produces what is essentially an Area of Effect, wherein anything within that area could be hit by anything from 0 to 12 huck+'ed spears.
