The scanner upgrade only shows you a ping on uncollected data.
you can't see uncollected molars on you map.
That drives me crazy as well. I'm missing around a dozen or so and my options are to either run around every square inch of the yard waiting for the SCAB thing to ping for a milk molar (then figure out if it is above or below me, etc) or go through a youtube vid for every single location...I'm not wanting to do either option.
You can just toggle it off if it bothers you. But there's plenty of valid reasons to have a memory of what's been collected, especially in consideration of multiplayer.
There will be times where you might pass a molar that is difficult to get to and just make a mental note to go back later. Sometimes you just forget if you got that one or not. It's nice for you or other people to see that it's not worth the trip to find out.
