(Since you have mosquito base waves, I am assuming you have access to this- my sincerest apologies if this is a spoiler)
So does a Sour Staff, if you're good at aiming those congressionally-slow moving sour balls.
You say that, but they don't HAVE to be. In my current game, I have yet to open the Oak Lab, have a Mosquito Needle, and will complete the Hedge Lab by simply walking into it. Actually trying to do as much as I possibly can BEFORE I open the Oak Lab, just to see exactly how much that is. Collecting the password pieces for the Hedge Lab without being able to use the Biometric scanner is tough, but doable.
But for very early on Mosquito encounters, a simple pebble axe and pretty much anything solid to stand under - a Hardy Weed, a rock overhang - anything you can stand under, will change the tide of battle really fast. The axe is nice for the quick stun it builds, and is much easier to hit a skeeter with than a spiky sprig or red ant club, as it is a faster weapon.
Other than that, it's really all about nailing those blocks. Most of the time, a perfect block will knock them right out of the air. Follow that up with a quick stun and the fight is over - they're stay down in 1-2 hits after that.
