Later you can make manual turrets that do lot of damages against raid.
Finally if you're really afraid, consider doing the mix.R event, for the guard dog mutation that increase your damage against raids.
Ideally, you should choose places that are hard (or even impossible) to reach for walking creatures, and/or are protected by indestructible world elements as much as possible, so you don't need to worry about defending your structures and you can take your time to fight the horde back.
The most famous examples of "safe" base locations are:
- On top of the baseball (you get there by walking up a thin stick, bugs can't)
- On the lilypads in the pond (walking bugs can't reach them, swimming bugs can't climb up)
- Inside the soda cans (anything inside that doesn't clip outside through the tin is safe)
Some people say that's cheesing because those bases are almost 100% safe. I personally likey bases to stay safe as I build them, so screw the bugs.
I also have a Juice box on one side and a steep drop into a pond on the other side, so I only have to fortify two sides instead of four.
You can of course use the "cheese" locations mentioned by others as well.
While I did not see walking BUGs on the lilypads, spider will visit them. Wolfspider inside the tree will jump on lilypads if it goes for a walk.
Noticed it after we build our first base on a lilypad and stayed a bit late.
