is this story driven or sandbox?

I've been interested in this since early development and keep on hesitating.

does it have a story that plays out beginning to end, or is it more like minecraft and terraria, where you just kinda build your base, gather materials and try to survive , with an occasional boss fight?

Both! Its kinda like Subnautica or The Forest in that regard. Story driven but boasting a large sandbox of enemies, weapons, craftables and buildable structures.

I'd super recommend it, me and my girlfriend played through it in about 30 hours just exploring and building, the combat is very fun and smooth too

Progression and story go hand in hand. It's a bit more concrete than Terraria. Like many games of this kind, you can also enable Creative mode to turn off all the danger.

The new custom modes they just put in are sandbox to the extreme, if you're into that too.

There is also a literal sandbox in the game.

also, side note. . i love how this had a "free week" to play free. i could have tried the game for free for an entire week. . .but the steam front page didn't actually "show" it to me until yesterday, when there's only 2 days left. . i moght have spent that week playing and wouldn't have had to ask this question and i know that's not the devs fault, it's the steam algorithm or whatever and how it decides what it wants to show me, but yeah, i'm annoyed that the "free week" wasn't more prominently displayed.

i guess i still have the rest of the day to try it

I have 30 hours on my current save and I havent even done the hedge maze yet. talk about a speedrun!

Same. Pretty huge fail on the promotion there. As it is I've had enough time to see enough of the game to not particularly interest me without being able to get far enough to determine if it gets more interesting later, so now I'm less likely to buy it than I was before. Good work!

Subnautica is the closest I can think of, but there isn't really combat, so not quite the same. Great story though. (I have 1,100 hours in Grounded, and 452 in Subnautica.)

sandbox game with a difficulty / advancement tier system that has an appealing story driving you forward that in itself unlocks "some" of the game elements.

Heard that Subnautica have a good story and beautiful scenario. I saw gameplay on youtube, its ui seems complicated to me. But I keep watching gameplay to see whether I have interest on it.

Till now from the lookings, I found grounded has more fun than Subnautica
