If you wanted maximum feature creep you could do something like a mobile storage / crafting station for big bug-mounts like the roly poly. Even just being able to load up a few pallets would be pretty rad.
I'm guessing they won't do this because it'd be pretty complicated to make work, and because many areas just aren't designed for big critters to navigate, but it's something I think could be really satisfying if well-handled.
other ideas would be a system like certain other games where you can whistle or something to summon your mount.
To address the game-breaking aspect. Just make them a pure utility thing. these should be like, horses, or things to help you mine rocks and grass in bulk, not combat buddies.
With regard to pets. They're irritating because they're killable by default, and get stuck in places any time you die, not even getting into glitches like the time my aphid became permanently trapped inside a rock while teleporting to follow me.
They're a fun idea but the actual implementation has had more annoyances than positives for me so far. Would prefer they do something less complicated like hang out at base being cute.
