A ranged weapon is definitely something you'll want. It can make the transition into tier 3 gear much easier. Insect bow is good, but that initial wolf spider can be rough until a player gears up a bit. I generally get the crow crossbow and use it to move into the black ox crossbow later on.
Also worth noting, is that some weapons have a 'generic' damage type that aren't particularly great, but also resisted by nothing. The Mint Mace is a good example of this. Primarily generic damage by default, with a bit of freshness on the side.
I'd argue against upgrading blunt weapons, like the black ox hammer, seeing as all the blunt weapons have lower than average dps, even against targets weak to blunt. Better to go for an elemental weakness instead, or tear through enemies with perks like barbarian and a mint mace.
Even besides that it isn't uncommon for me to also be carrying a staff and spear of some kind as well.
