Later on in the game, you get recipes to make the whetstone and plating out of stuff that is renewable. However, you still seem to need it to make the smithing station in the first place so I guess it could be an issue at some point and you couldn't make more stations. But that isn't likely to happen.

Edit: And I clicked the wrong thing, and deleted instead of edited the first reply I did.

It's not worth it to upgrade the first two tiers of weapons. once you get the termite ax and black ox hammer and black ant shovel, then you can upgrade weapons. if you watch someone on a speed run( you can take out a lot of bugs (bombardier, Stink, and termites.) with pebble spears 10 to 14(think of them like a large bow). throwing does a lot more damage.

it's 100% worth it to upgrade your main weapon (T2) up to L5. brittle quartz is pretty common. and i played with 2 friends, if you're solo or 2manning you get even more quartz per person. as for armor, probably don't bother with T1 armor but def upgrade T2 to L5, it will be a long time before you get the T3 mats since most T3 armor takes T3 mats, you even have to make an axe first, then get pupa then make hammer, sequential locks like that really slow down T3 aquisition. the upgrades make a big difference, use them. also like another poster said, "brittle" quartz and marble become infinite later on anyway. if you want some easy marble/quartz near the starting zone, build a full set of red ant armor and just waltz through the red anthill (they won't attack, not even soldiers) with a torch and a hammer.

If you're rushing T3 stuff then yeah, it's not worth upgrading. Though on a casual playthrough it's not that damaging to also upgrade T2 stuff every now and then, especially since it also repairs the stuff. Obviously not everything needs to be upgraded to the max (and i would definitely not recommend to upgrade it Past the 5th upgrade), but something like the axe or the knife can definitely be useful early on, if you've still tons of insects to fight through.

And the Bow doesn't have a T3 variation, so upgrading the T2 bow is definitely a viable option, if you don't want to use the crossbow.

i might remember wrong, but im pretty sure there was recipes to craft ALL upgrade materials without needing any of those stones, fully from renewable resources. Which means go nuts, you won't run out them.

You could not craft brittle whetstone and brittle plating before, since there was only Quartzite shards and if you used the last one found on the map, but THEN the smithing station broke u were EFFED. Crafting whetstone and plating for upgrading was only added shortly before the 1.0 release, before that you used quartzite shards for everything...
