Spider aggro/base walls?
Hey all,
Anyone know anything about spiders or other bugs that may aggro through base walls?
In other words, can they see? Hear? Smell? Through base walls?
What about a roof?
I am trying to determine how big to build my base, how high, and whether or not to cover it, and I basically just want a safe haven away from bugs so they won't bust through like the kool-aid man. Your input is much appreciated.
Thanks!

I always build at least 5 stories high, to avoid night time spider mischief. I'm pretty sure spider can hear you if you make noises while moving around, if you kill something and make a lot of noise, they will come around to see what's going on.

I've hidden behind a wall and a half worth of grass wall and the wolf spider on the other sides with its legs through the fence hasn't aggro'd me or destroyed the wall, by hidden i mean staying out of its line of sight and crouched/not moving. but if thats not for you then build up on something high or out on the lily pads.

I didn't think of building on the lily pads, that's actually a good idea - thanks!

I built a big base on lilypads and it did seem pretty safe. But after a raid I found damage to the flooring on the parts I built over the water. I got kinda worried my floor would be destroyed and my stuff fall into the pond.

I ended up building another base on a pylon and so far it's pretty great. My base extends to the ground but there's just walls and stuff, mostly for looks, so if they want to be distracted by that while I kill them it's fine. So far the pylon is pretty good though.

you do learn how to make floating foundation for a floating base. but i took a different tact, just made a 1-tall palisade around a soda can (base inside the can) can is perfectly safe, spider can't get in, my storage and workshops were safe in there, and in the gateway (just an empty spot in the wall) i put a bunch of spike traps. it was the only way i could beat wolf spiders early on, relying on spike traps. they definitely hear you moving around though.

Good info! I did relocate my base to the lily pads - I didn't have the floating floors yet, so I built on the lily pads and extended out from there. I'm far enough away from the shore that a jumping wolf spider *shouldn't* get me.

That aside, I also was worried about floor damage - so I went big. As in, wide, instead of tall. I've got no walls, torches all around, multiple lily pads. Flooring is present where I want it to be, and in case the floor breaks, all storage/crafting/etc is on the lilypad itself. Worst case scenario, I can collect items...and they won't fall to the ground in the water!

Now....if only I could do something about that Koi fish that seems to like to camp underneath my water base floor.....I wonder if that was intentional by the Devs or if the fish is just RNG'ing its way over to my neck of the pond, lol

Enemies need to directly see you to get aggro, so using line-of-sight-blocks usually helps (you can even stand behind them and they will only attack, when they turn around). Though instead of building strange buildings, just to not be seen, you can also just build walls around the sleeping places of the wolf spiders, so that they can't leave their place at night. They will just constantly run against the wall, but never attack it.

As for bases, never build it in a way, that destroying 1 or 2 parts of it lead to total loss of everything. Rather try to build multiple anchors, so that when one way gets destroyed, others are still their to keep the structure from falling. Might also be a good idea to build palisades or mushroom walls to protect those anchors, if they're build on land.

i build atop the logs that mark the garden areas, seems to work spiral stairs to keep footprint low with a tower favourite spot is the one with a field station at its base tucked beside the western side of the oak. That and i kill any spider that exists for the glue components
