I ended up building another base on a pylon and so far it's pretty great. My base extends to the ground but there's just walls and stuff, mostly for looks, so if they want to be distracted by that while I kill them it's fine. So far the pylon is pretty good though.
That aside, I also was worried about floor damage - so I went big. As in, wide, instead of tall. I've got no walls, torches all around, multiple lily pads. Flooring is present where I want it to be, and in case the floor breaks, all storage/crafting/etc is on the lilypad itself. Worst case scenario, I can collect items...and they won't fall to the ground in the water!
Now....if only I could do something about that Koi fish that seems to like to camp underneath my water base floor.....I wonder if that was intentional by the Devs or if the fish is just RNG'ing its way over to my neck of the pond, lol
As for bases, never build it in a way, that destroying 1 or 2 parts of it lead to total loss of everything. Rather try to build multiple anchors, so that when one way gets destroyed, others are still their to keep the structure from falling. Might also be a good idea to build palisades or mushroom walls to protect those anchors, if they're build on land.
