But as far as the bulk of my food in game, especially early on when I dont have so many options, i love gnat roast most but you cant always find those everywhere (though admittedly you dont usually have to go all that far either) so I mostly just make and eat aphid/weevil roasts as i need. I dont tend to bother carrying more than 3 already cooked at a time so they dont spoil, and you can keep the raw meat in your inventory until it is nearly spoiled, cook it, and have a fresh spoil timer as well to really maximize how long that food is good for. Of course, i also have little outposts around the map (most of them are just a lean-to, a cooking fire, and maybe a light to make them easier to spot at night, added some water storage to the more used ones later on) so there's always somewhere within a reasonable distance that i can safely go cook and rest to.
Late game I just cook up a ton of Onyx burgers and store them in the fridge. Just pop one before heading out and you will have a full stomach for the day. The materials to cook them are easy to get (especially if you are farming supreme stones) and the buff it provides is useful in just about ever situation.
as for spoiling: late in game there will be something so your food doesnt spoil anymore. dont want to spoiler what
