Wait.. so you have NEVER played on normal settings and going for permadeath right off the bat? Yikes.. ok.
Well, first you will need to learn to perfect block, that will help keep you alive in sequential play-throughs.. because well.. you WILL die... a LOT.
Always have some healing food with you. The very first area is chock full of easy to kill prey that you can cook from day 1, which heals you about 50-80% of your health. Each morsel takes an inventory slot, but it is worth bringing at least 2-3 with everytime you go exploring.
You can 'Huck' Spears, and do MASSIVE damage.. but each spear takes 1 inventory slot, good for mid-sized enemies like ants, bombadiers, and stink bugs, etc.
Cheese everything you can! Get enemies stuck, jump up on the grass, or build a scaffold shooting tower. Cheese is your friend: abuse it.
Block spiders inside their spawns.. takes a lot of building, but worth it long run.
You die when oxygen reaches 0... don't dive deep unless you have some water breathing gear/diving buffs, and killing spiders and waterboat bugs under the water will give you some oxygen.
The only way to get poison resistance is by killing the spiders that poison you. Good luck!
Go for tank builds. Get Acorn Armor, then upgrade to Ladybug Armor asap.
Use health-increasing buffs.
Do NOT rush the story, take all the time you need to upgrade yourself and your gear. This said, do the first mission about activating the mysterious machine and later going to the Oak asap, because that will unlock a ton of useful options and mechanics (for you, the Meat Shield mutation will be a must).
I think you're insane for jumping in with permadeath on Whoa! difficulty but you do you. The only thing is perfect blocking. You have to do that to survive. That's the biggest key. You learn that and you'll pretty much be set. The problem is you normally learn the timings for the blocks by trial and error, something that you really can't do if you're doing permadeath. This is why I would say play the game normally first, then do your super ultra pro hardcore mlg mode. Like I said though, you do you. Glad to hear you're enjoying it at least.
Always carry several pieces of cooked food with you. Early on, smoothies and bandages are quite slow to heal (but still very helpful), but Roasts will instantly heal a big chunk of health. Problem is that they spoil and each take an inventory slot, so whenever you wander out to unknown territory or to do combat, hunt some critters and food to go with you.
Try to find a safe base location. On the flat rocks next to the pond is fairly safe, or you can build on top of the lilypads to be even safer. The baseball is pretty good, too, but there are some wolf spiders that always patrol there between 2 and 4 AM.
Also, get a Weevil Shield asap. It'll help you while you get good at perfect blocking, as it will prevent all damage when blocking and also stop you from getting poisoned through chip damage, as long as you have stamina. It's also a great tool for making an escape from agile enemies. Speaking of which -- don't hesitate to run away as soon as you feel even slightly overwhelmed. To help with that, you can also craft an item called Shinobi Sneeze. I've only tried it a few times, but it has absolutely saved my life those times.
This game canonically has got 4 playing characters.
Should the OP die, as long as he respawns with a previously unused character, the lost ones will stay dead, but the OP will have up to 4 "lives" to beat the game without technically having resurrected anyone.
There is no way to prepare your gear so you can over power them and not be one shot, you have to learn their moves. Unfortunately the game devs put in trigger points where the boss will use a new devastating move or effect and if you get hit your dead, if you have never seen it then most likely dead.
It was bad enough re-spawning 2 or 3 times every boss battle sometimes more if I couldn't figure out what just one shot me. I can't imagine restarting the entire game.
My one piece of advice never go out at night, a silent one shot monster roams at night.
