Crafting materials:

Thought I remembered hearing/reading that material for crafting that is stored in storage bins or such close by to crafting stations and building points can be used?
I can craft armor and weapons but anything else like buildings and building attachments I'm finding need the items on me. Is this right or am I running into something weird?
Either way least I can craft armor and weapons without holding everything at least.
