My solution to that was to stick with the gnat pet and lock it in a tower, partly because it seems to be the least likely to die (though mine constantly tries to make ME kill it mid-fight by becoming boop obsessed and constantly getting in my way) when it does follow me around and partly because it's little glide boost is the most unique of the pet buffs in my opinion. I have several other options to reduce or manage my hunger/thirst drain like the weevil and aphid help with, I dont have many options to make my tuft work a bit better. So I just made a bed for the hunger/thirst help and kept the gnat.
