Roly Poly Armor
I've tried using this armor as a tank set, since it gives "Taunting Gaze" which supposedly makes it more likely that enemies will attack me. Problem is, It never seems to work.

I can't seem to ever keep aggro with this armor. In the current Multiplayer game I'm doing with some friends, even with 10-15 seconds of fighting solo against a mob, the Host can come in and hit it once with a 2H weapon, and immediately take aggro.

I've actually found that I keep aggro more reliably with Fire Ant Armor and Daggers than I do with the Roly Poly Armor and any weapon.

in a 2 player game I'm doing with someone else, we've noticed the same thing when he wears the Acorn Armor as the host.

Has anyone else dealt with this and if so, have you made it work somehow or not?

I'm not quite sure how the aggro works but to me it feels like whoever is hitting it first and/or doing more damage takes the aggro.

I'm not sure about taunting gaze, but acorn armor sure does have an aggro multiplier, so coul that possibly trump the one of roly poly armor?

I can't say for sure but i have noticed similar when playing with my husband. I ended up focusing on health and generally not dying despite me being an idiot about exploration in 90% of my games, so i ultimately became our tank. The husband on the other hand apparently likes zooming around (well, until the recent update/bug, now he climbs weeds) and pulling a "cant touch this" with ranged weapons for the most part. As long as he sticks to ranged I can keep aggro, but regardless of armor I will lose that aggro if Im sticking to my axe and my husband joins in melee; which has me suspecting that the critters may prioritize the highest DPS character (if reachable) currently attacking them (I use the axe despite it not being the best because ive gotten so used to the timing of it, which means 9 out of 10 times, my husband has the better weapon for the situation at hand).

I had mild success with the acorn armor earlier in the game, but it seemed like it was best for initially pulling the aggro, not necessarily keeping it. I didn't try out the roly poly armor for very long because i really wasn't noticing much of a difference though. Instead i just went back to my nice sleek ladybug armor and just became a living wall between the bugs and the squishy mage. Even if i can't keep aggro I got good with the blocking so I can generally keep things off him if I stand between them. Though we also haven't tried any of the optional bosses like the broodmother yet, so maybe those aggro based armor sets would have more use there?

try testing out whoever is closer after their animation for an attack, you'll find it easier to bounce aggro back and forth
