How to kill a @#$! wolf spider
In the right circumstances, I can kill a spider cheesily, taking advantage of the AI limitations and using dozens of arrows, but whatever I try, it's total suicide to get in close with them.

Better weapons and armor matter not at all. Buffed acorn armor isn't much better than going in nekkid, and buffed weapons still do tiny chips of damage. Then, I watched a couple of videos showing youtubers showing off their blocking, and killing one with no armor and a peblet axe or spear. Yeah, right. I notice these videos are a year or more old, and current spiders seem twice the size, three times as aggressive, and four times as fast.

I've tried to duplicate this- Save the game, attack a sleeping spider, then practice blocking. And dying. Over. and over. and over. and over again. I don't have the timing of a professional real life martial artist, that's why I play video games instead. The hit so hard, fast, and often, they don't even NEED poison. And of course, one poison hit and it's all over.

Do I just need to start a new game with a nerfed/easy setting on the combat? What's the trick to dealing with these things? I'm willing to learn, but I'm not a master of twitch reflex combat, and I'm not sure I COULD be, even if that's the kind of game play I wanted.

love all these people commenting that you need the mithridatism mutation lol

do you remember how to get it? you have to beat wolf spiders... and now, it levels up 3 times to only 75% poison immunity. it used to be 100%, after killing I think it was 5 wolf spiders :steamfacepalm:

OP, I would say, either take the time and practice practice practice, but you say you have been trying, so maybe just try and cheese a few, until you have unlocked that mutation, it really does help.

otherwise, just avoid until you have atleast lady bug armour (maybe even upgraded), and a decent, spicy upgraded sword..

I really don't get the changes to that perk either. Poison damage already feels far weaker than it used to be. Enough that I wouldn't even bother equipping it. Doubly so now that the perk is pointless since it doesn't negate poison entirely.

I kinda get that poison is a massive problem for many players, it is literally the bane of their existence. so that's why it (mithridatism) exists in the first place.
but then I guess that devs realised, that it literally made wolf spiders a joke thereafter, and thus, we have the change now. to atleast try and remind a player, wolf spiders are no joke, lmao
I do agree though, it is still pretty pointless, to some. to others, it is still a god send.

I had the same thought, about the Mithridatism. By the time I can get it, why do I need it?
My blocking skills are so bad, the spider can just melee me to death. The poison just seals the deal. I think you're summing up the best advice of this thread here, at least for me. Someone else suggested starting easier, training blocking skills with lawn mites for example. I'm not a fan of combat systems based on twitch reflexes, but I like Grounded enough I think I need to just embrace the frustration and train myself to do it.

But right now, I've got the game on the back burner. Holding out for the 1.0 release, so I don't burn out on it before it's finalized.
I would say, training reflexes with a lawn mite isn't the worst thing you could do, but I feel training against the real thing may be more beneficial..

You can definitely hone your skills against lesser enemies, but I feel it is better to learn the actual attacks/warning signs of the wolf.

If all else fails, have you tried spamming block? Even that can save you a number of attacks :) There is definitely a pattern to it, it just takes time to learn the warnings of what attack is coming

Yep, I've got to just sit down and do it, for as long as it takes. I've got the patience for a lot of tedium when it comes to building. Don't know why I have so little for combat mechanics, but I'm just going to have to gut it out.

Yeah if you have the patience for building (carrying all those blades of grass solo sucks!) then you can handle a spider.
parrying with really any armor preferably acorn and the barbarian mutation with some smoothies and mithridatism mutation, that mutation got nerfed but its still better than nothing. I typically use the ant club at the beginning, though theres not much of a point to killing wolfies unless you encounter them in the wild.

a lot of people talk about cheesing them but its more fun doing it without exploits

Except...Barbarian mutation makes it where you can't perfect block.

It was changed when they overhauled a few of the perks a couple updates back. I think it changed with the Hot and Hazy update if I remember right.

ahh thats probably why, didnt put much playtime into it after launch
With Bow or Armbow you need level II Arrows. The makes more Damage. Also use the rotten Bee Armor with Bow. You have a Chance to stan the Spider. And always from Higer Terrain. But be care if you fight against two Wolf Spider at same time. In me fight one Spider jumps up and hold in the tree and the other jumps on der first and then up to my Platform. I was really afraid. :) And i was standing verry high.
