Which gear do I need for upper yard?

Playing on normal, solo.

I was getting to the point where I could run around with relatively little risk with my ant lion armor, ant lion great sword, crossbow and mosquito sword.

And then I went to the upper yard and got my ass kicked.

What should I be upgrading to before going back up there?

Koi armor / Spider Armor if you are offensive.
Ladybug can get you through most of the game if you like playing defensively.

You'll want to get a rusty spear asap. They're great against ladybird larva, dust mites and fire ants. Make it fresh when you can. Until then a stinger spear is a good substitute against a lot of bugs.

You'll also need something to kill black ox beetles, which i'd suggest the club of the motherdemon for until you get the salt morning star. If you haven't done the broodmother yet now is the time, your gear should make it a cakewalk.

For armor the sleek mask of the motherdemon is great against pretty much everything that isn't a spider. If you're having trouble with dying i'd combine that with roly poly chest & legs, also sleek if you can afford it for the extra blocking strength, otherwise sleek spider armor for more poison damage.

You can practice fighting roly polies against the sickly ones by the trash area, they're a little weaker than the normal ones but have the same moves.

antlion T3 armor gives a nice defense boost and you can make it before going to the upper yard

Ladybug armor at 9 sleek. Fire ant shield. Toenail scimitar as high as you can get it. Compliance badge with slop and bandages can solo anything in the game. The problem is when you get 4 or more on you. Maxed club of the mother demon to the rescue.
This build completely wrecks black widows if you kill the younglings first like skywalker did.

tbh your current gear should be fine for upper yard. are you upgrading it or is it still lvl 1?
You can also just run away from most bugs and fight them on your terms, for example black ox beetles are pretty easy to dodge and you can lure them near fire ants/larva. The black ox aoe will hit the other bugs and they will start fighting making your job much easier.
this also works on roly-polys and ladybirds too (but i dont think larva will fight ladybirds?).
This is a good way to get the parts to make the best t3 gear if fighting these bugs straight up is proving difficult.
