I started doing the same thing as @Phadin, I put 'extras' of those specific things that I do carry all the time into a separate chest a bit away from all my other chests. It's still in the same room even, just on the other side from my main storage shelves.
I either need to start doing that or pay attention and re-grab healing/arrows after depositing, lol.
My main crafting/storage room is 5 x 6, with my main storage on shelving units along 3 of the 4 walls, with crafting stations alongside (in between storage) and in the middle. Standing 1 tile offset from the middle in the direction of all the main storage is enough that a single chest on the far wall where I keep the extras of things I do NOT want to auto-store when pushing N is far enough away.
I love the feature, but i can't count how many times i deposited my aphid slippers, healing smoothies or even weapons if i have one with a different element in a chest somewhere.
I've just stopped storing pre-made green machines, bandages and splinter arrows for now to work around it.
Instead i just keep a stock of the mats and craft them when my carry-stack gets low.
That's actually a really good idea. It would be far easier for them to implement that the marking of individual items, so a solution more likely to actually get added.
