Does Single Player require an Xbox account?
I have no interest in Multiplayer, so can I play in Single Player without additional logins or DRM?

No login is required for single player, but you won't get achievements unless you do login if that matters to you.

If you are on windows, you already HAVE an Xbox Live account, btw. Your Microsoft login can be used as an Xbox Live login (though you may have do a one time thing on the Xbox Live site to enable that).
You also only have to log in One time, ever. Once you login once, the game remembers it and doesn't prompt you for a login in the future.

Uhm.. wait,, quick question here as i'm also very interested in the game but want to play it alone.. Without logging into your xbox account you won't get any achievements you said, but what about steam achievements ? they should drop without any login to your xbox account.

also, if you login to your xbox account, do you get achievements on your xbox gamertag for this game aswell ? asking because i checked someone that had the steam version and he was logged into the game but didn't get any xbox achievements, only steam achievements. could you, or someone else who is logged into your xbox account and has the game through steam check if you also get achievements on xbox additionally to the steam ones ? would really appreciate it

@Monzun, the achievement system appears to be linked to the Xbox Live login, even for Steam Achievements. People have reported not getting them until they logged in within the game.
I logged in the very first time I played the game in early access, and it's auto-logged me in ever since then. So I honestly cannot say for sure that it's true, but enough people have said it online that I believe it. It's also not the first game I played made by Microsoft that worked that way. They do like to tie everything to an Xbox Live login.

As for achievements, I can confirm that for myself the achievements are registering on Steam and NOT on the Xbox Live. I assume you need the Windows Store or Xbox version of the game for those and that you only get Steam achievements if you have the Steam version of the game.

Why even care if you have to login. Might as well not own a computer connected to the internet if your that paranoid of DRM or logins. You login to steam and if you really want to protect your account and a vast investment you may have put in now they have your number and an app on your phone.

OH WOW, thats ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ garbage. so you need to login to xbox live to get steam achievements but you won't get those xbox live achievements... this sucks... i want to either get achievs on my xbox live account AND on steam or only on steam without logging in. otherwise the game will be at the top of my xbox played games with alot of playtime but zero achievements, which looks like ♥♥♥♥ and i hate that :(

@Monzun, Yah, it is kind of odd that the xbox achievements don't register. Most of the Steam game I play which use Xbox Live at least gave the achievements on both platforms.

well... i'm 100% sure they are blocking those xbox live achievements when bought on steam because:

1. the first few games microsoft released on steam worked flawlessly and you got xbox live and steam achievements in the same moment.. examples are age of empires 2 definitive edition, sea of thieves etc. i have all those games and i unlocked xbox live and steam achievements at the same moment for all those games

2. starting with the microsoft flight simulator someone at microsoft had the brilliant idea to block unlocking xbox live achievements when buying games through steam.. i noticed right away on the flight simulator and was super annoyed by that fact.. from that game on up you could only unlock steam achievements when playing microsoft games and being logged into xbox live.. all you would get is the playtime counter on xbox live, this would still work but no achievements at all..

3. now with grounded they went even further.. you have to login to xbox live to be able to unlock steam achievements (doesn't make sense UNLESS...) but xbox live achievements are still blocked from unlocking.. its clear because why else would you need to login into xbox live to be able to unlock steam achievements if they weren't tied to xbox live achievements.. what happens here is.. the game unlocks the xbox live achievement and then the steam achievemnet, but blocks the xbox live achievemen from unlocking on players profiles because some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at microsoft decided this............

so now its clear that they are deliberately blocking the unlocking of xbox live achievements when buying games through steam. i'm really annoyed and angry about that because i want to progress my xbox account too when i'm forced to login into xbox live anyway.. i want to get more gamerscore points not only steam achievements, which are worthless... thaks microsoft ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for doing this to your customers.. deliberately blocking xbox live achievement unlocking

Pretty much totally agree with you @Monzun. From a coding standpoint, the only way it makes sense is that the game registers the Xbox achievements, and then there is a layer that passes that through as a Steam achievement but also intentionally doesn't unlock the Xbox one. It's the ONLY way how it works makes sense.

Can someone explain what the problem is with having an Xbox Live/Microsoft account? I get that it's an annoying extra step, but it literally is just using an email to log in and honestly, it only needs to be done once unless you restart your computer.

I'm not meaning to be combative, I just never really understood why people fuss about this.

I don't understand it either. How people pick and choose being willing to have one account (steam for example) but then freak out if they need one for Ubisoft or Xbox Live or whatever is just plain weird to me.
I think, in their minds, the issue is that they are being 'forced to' make an account with a different service from the one they 'choose to'. But if so, it's a strange hill to choose to die on compared to all the other problems in the world.

Don't get me wrong, I 100% understand why people hate Epic Games or Ubisoft. I hate having to launch my games through another launcher, and while this has never prevented me from purchasing a game, it definitely makes me agitated. NO ONE likes Ubisoft or EA's launchers. NO ONE. And anyone that does is a psychopath. lol

Thing is, that's not the case here. You're not launching the game through any other launcher, but just requiring a Xbox login to enjoy the multiplayer. Pointless? Sure, but otherwise pretty ignore-able.

Achievements only being unlocked through an Xbox login is a bit silly though.

You nailed it with the "annoying extra step" bit and that is enough on it's own for something that I don't actually need in the first place.

But it is also one extra roadblock and one extra potential for failure preventing you from accessing the game that you purchased for something that is totally unnecessary. Yes, I already have an Xbox account that I needed to dig up and try and gain access to again because I hadn't needed to use it in years. But I shouldn't have to do that. I should only need to worry about the service I purchased the game from.

And this is the thing. People complain about Epic and Ubisoft because they are exceptionally egregious. But that doesn't mean we should start making excuses for other services to weasel their way in because we don't physically see the effects right away.

I understand a Microsoft account for cross-play. That is actually necessary for it to function. But not for single player.

It's an email address. It's about as time consuming as turning on the TV and changing the channel. It's mere button presses that take fractions of a second out of your life. Especially since you only really have to do it once unless you restart your PC. I mean is it pointless? Sure but it's hardly anything to really be upset about.

If you were having to launch the game through Xbox app or something then I would be on the same page as you. F*ck off with all these extra launchers. If I wanted to use them I would buy the game on that launcher.

Also, it doesn't prevent you from accessing the game. You can playing singleplayer without logging in. Granted, yes you can't access multiplayer but you can't do that either without using an email/account name for Steam. It's a pointless extra step, I agree, but it's really not that big of a deal.
