Think he means the server browser is completely broken and doesn't actually show any servers. He's right, currently the only way to play multiplayer is via directly connecting to a friend. It is a broken system, legit complaint.

...Its not broken, it ISNT a server finder. You cant just find servers; that was never the point of the game, nor EVER an intended feature.

Well... using the word "literally" is a stretch, there are several survival games that follow the same approach, where peer-to-peer is the only option. And there are a ton where both methods are implemented.

I also recall one a few years back which had the server browser and publicly joinable servers but then removed it in a patch and reverted the game to peer-to-peer among friends only (like Grounded is).

I bought the game when it was in EA, and I'm still waiting for the game to allow "random matchmaking/server" before touching it again.

Last year, I also asked about this "random MM" on their discord multiple times, and the devs never responded to that question (while responding to other "normal" questions about new features), almost if like they wanted to avoid this subject.

It's a shame because I don't want to constantly search for people to play with on discord or whatever stupid app microsoft is forcing down my throat, I want to boot the game, click multiplayer and play with a random person, like I do in all others games (playing Elden Ring right now) and this, at whatever times of the day, even at 3AM without a mic if needed.

I don't want to carry a bag of friends or other players with me all the times, I should be able to enjoy the multiplayer parts without having to almost make a clan and manage a list of people to only specifically play this game online.

Until they bring, in my opinion, the most important feature for a game that can be played online (random MM), I will continue not touching it, like I did for years already, and as proven by this thread, many players will do the same.

So, Is this game still "friends only" ?

Make friends dude...♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It was -never- intended to be random mm. They didnt avoid the topic, you ignored the answer and design intent.

72% of gamers are loners, depressed and cant be bothered to make "friends" just to play games with. we need multiplayer lobby or my depression hits rock bottom and bad feels

That's the thing, they did. It was stipulated back then that Matchmaking would be released later, hence why 1 year later I asked about this. (I could search though discord messages and post for the source, but meh, I have better things to do)

Now 2 years have passed, and it seems the situation is the same. If they scrapped this feature altogether, then fine, at least say it, instead of not communicating about it for years.

I imagine that the reality is that it's the not the studio that have the final decision on this feature, and that it's Microsoft trying so hard to push their LFG/Xbox app sh//it, hence why the same stupid decision of not MM for coop was decided for Halo infinite too.

Still, it doesn't give a good look about all of this.

They didn't. It was never to be a mm game. It was -always- intended at a p2p with friend based multiplayer.

The optics are just fine, you just don't like the decision.

Luckily there are many other games you can play that will help with this.

This game would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with random mm, as youd just have your base destroyed by trolls, and Id rather not have the devs spend time putting in player interaction limitations to code for that.

This simply isnt that kind of game.
Shoddyfrog Sep 28, 2022 @ 6:35am
Nobody in there right mind, would want to play a co-op survival game with strangers.
In a game like this, you have to grind for a LONG time, collecting materials and building a base. All that work could be destroyed in seconds by some random person just because they felt like being a troll. Just in case there is anyone who does not know this: the internet is full of trolls.
As soon as any group of players starts to make any progress in the game, if they had any sense they would make their server password protected. Defeating the object of the developers making open servers in the first place.
The only games suitable for open servers are PVP, or co-op games that don't have any progression that could be destroyed.

I think that's the issue, a lot of other 'similar' survival games to this also have PvP elements and do have public servers (example would be Ark Survival Evolved), so the OP and others that share his opinion are looking at this game through the lens of past experience with those games....completely failing to recognize that this game is NOT like those games, as it doesn't have PvP elements.
Unless you count friendly fire, but wanting public servers just so you can use friendly fire on other players is a pretty ridiculous thing to expect Obsidian to support.

Yeah, on the subject of Ark. Actually they did have PVE only servers, with systems in place so that only other players who had been invited into a 'Tribe' could dismantle structures, or shoot and damage other tribe members.
So if that was a co-op survival game which did have open servers. So what's the problem then? Why couldn't they have the same solution for this game?
Well, it's because it didn't work. Trust me I spent a LOT of time playing on PVE Ark servers.
Players did not have to be able to dismantle your stuff to be able to ruin other peoples fun. They could jump around in front of you the whole time, they could build structures blocking you base, blocking access to areas of the world. They could spam chat. The list of ways trolls found to ruin everyone else's game was endless.
The developers spent a lot of money designing ways to stop them, but it was a losing battle. They employed full time staff to sort out disputes, visit servers, removing structures placed by trolls purely to annoy others. Lots of time and money that could have been spent improving the game, and none of it was effective. Money down the drain.

@Shoddyfrog, yah, I remember all that. Personally, I'm convinced that most of the people most vocal in wanting public servers for this game are in that group of players that likes to go out of their way to ruin other people's fun. Mind you, I said 'most,' not 'all'....but I'd be willing to bet a month's paycheck that most of them are.
THE PILGRIM Sep 28, 2022 @ 7:39am
Why would you want public servers in this game? So you can have randoms join your world and potentially eff it up? So you can join a game that's 'X' the way through the game, so you've actually missed content? So you can join a game that you will never join again, because the server host may never play again? Or to join a dedicated server that your friends play on? Oh wait you can do that! It's entirely clear that this game is meant for FRIENDS, and if you've played the game you'd know exactly why this game would suffer from public servers. See Conan Exiles (blocking story areas with base building, trolling, the list goes on). So what, you host a server, randoms join, they can't play through the whole game in one session, then they leave? Who wants to play random parts of the game over and over? It's not really that kind of survival game. It's very story driven. Need help with the game? Have literally ONE friend, or ask someone on a steam group to join up with you.

PVP? Most people don't have friends that want to buy the same games all the time, personally i prefer to play with randoms for content, get's boring playing with the same RL friends every game. A lot of these games die fast because of lack of public servers. Just a fact, very disappointing to see this and it will limit the success and player count, with pub online this game would have over 100k right now on Steam, guaranteed. Without online servers there is no reason to rush and get it before it dies down or something. I'll just leave it on back log and wish-listed for a 10 dollar sale in few months. After-all no point rushing single player games, They aren't going anywhere and only will depreciate. Will be able to buy a 4 pack or something by then for my homies.

JUST FIND FRIENDS u IDOTS
lol that isn't the issue, the issue is that for the price it doesn't provide enough. These type of games are usually 20 bucks and remain in early access forever lol get gud, you're cute. Have friends, we will try it when it's 10 bucks soon.

Too many post to respond to all of them, so I will be clear for those 8 year old kids here:

The people using that argument of "why would you want what ? MM would be bad for the game, think about the trolls", fail to realize that MM would allow BOTH random and friends only.

There is not a single argument that would make MM not worth it. You think MM is bad and you cannot understand why some people would want to play with random ? Fine, make your lobby private/invite only and stick to your friends.

Have no friends playing this game at 3AM ? no problem, join a MM and have some fun.

It's not that hard to understand, at least, if you are not a shills that try so hard to defend your favorite game.

Because let's be real, most of the argumentation thrown here are people trying to literally say that a feature that allow more people to enjoy this game (without negative impact in the way the rest of playerbase play the game) is bad.

As for the other stupid answer like "get friends lul", I consider they are either a troll or just very very limited in brain capacity. Any games/mode that require to having a "friend" at disposal to enjoy online multiplayer is doomed from the get go.

Many "friends" will sometime stop to play the game, will sometime not be available at random hours, or will not sometime want to come play Grounded for 1 hours between work shift etc.....

Now you will say: "well, just find some people on LFG/Discord bro !" Oh yeah, nice idea ! But wait a minute.................................................doesn't this mean I need to search for random players ? you know, like an MM thing would do ? just worst because now I need to spend my time installing stupid apps and basically playing tinder friend simulator for just 1 hour of online play ? Ah yeah, nice solution my friend !

All in all, we have a feature that would allow the online multiplayer part to shine and make this game more popular for many people around the world that is clearly missing, no matter what your argument is, a game that absolutely require to have a friend ready to play to be able to enjoy the online aspect is a game that will always suffer to attract more people, as been shown here, on the discord etc...

I will now stop talking about that (and caring about this game), already 2 years that this issue is here, there is already countless of people and post that complained about the same stupid decision on Halo infinite coop, so it's a subject that already being beaten to death. if Microsoft doesn't care, then we shouldn't care for the game either.

PS: as for the people that ask for proof of the "stipulated back then that Matchmaking would be released later". It's impossible to find it back on google, simply because most of the news/page with promised feature "under work" have been bombarded with each new update, burying the possible result, and from my own research on the discord, it seems a huge part of the discussion on the suggestion thread have been pruned/modified (I think the channel itself have been modified). So feel free to not believe me if you want, after all, I can't and I won't spend hours to find it back, so it's fair.

And yes, I followed the game since the beginning, to a point where I was even in talk with some devs of the game (microsoft side) to fix the issues that prevented Windows 7 users to log in online back then. (sending reports and testing alpha build for fixing the issue in DM)

You can even see some very old post of mine in this steam discussion here too:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/962130/discussions/0/2787117551531568001/#c2787117551534504451 (30 July 2020)

So it's not like I'm hating the game, I'm very serious when I say that me and many other people are locked out of the multiplayer part without MM.

I will go back playing Elden Ring, a focused singleplayer game that have Matchmaking that allow me to play online at 4AM for 1 hour without requiring to wake up all my friends.

Oh, and just last thing, about that argumentation of trolls, let's remember that Rust have also coop only server, where your base (TC) have privilege, which mean only those that you allow to have said building privilege can impact your base...... but eh, it's not like it will change anything, right ?
