...Its not broken, it ISNT a server finder. You cant just find servers; that was never the point of the game, nor EVER an intended feature.
Make friends dude...♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It was -never- intended to be random mm. They didnt avoid the topic, you ignored the answer and design intent.
They didn't. It was never to be a mm game. It was -always- intended at a p2p with friend based multiplayer.
The optics are just fine, you just don't like the decision.
This game would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with random mm, as youd just have your base destroyed by trolls, and Id rather not have the devs spend time putting in player interaction limitations to code for that.
This simply isnt that kind of game.
In a game like this, you have to grind for a LONG time, collecting materials and building a base. All that work could be destroyed in seconds by some random person just because they felt like being a troll. Just in case there is anyone who does not know this: the internet is full of trolls.
As soon as any group of players starts to make any progress in the game, if they had any sense they would make their server password protected. Defeating the object of the developers making open servers in the first place.
The only games suitable for open servers are PVP, or co-op games that don't have any progression that could be destroyed.
This exactly.
I think that's the issue, a lot of other 'similar' survival games to this also have PvP elements and do have public servers (example would be Ark Survival Evolved), so the OP and others that share his opinion are looking at this game through the lens of past experience with those games....completely failing to recognize that this game is NOT like those games, as it doesn't have PvP elements.
Unless you count friendly fire, but wanting public servers just so you can use friendly fire on other players is a pretty ridiculous thing to expect Obsidian to support.
So if that was a co-op survival game which did have open servers. So what's the problem then? Why couldn't they have the same solution for this game?
Well, it's because it didn't work. Trust me I spent a LOT of time playing on PVE Ark servers.
Players did not have to be able to dismantle your stuff to be able to ruin other peoples fun. They could jump around in front of you the whole time, they could build structures blocking you base, blocking access to areas of the world. They could spam chat. The list of ways trolls found to ruin everyone else's game was endless.
The developers spent a lot of money designing ways to stop them, but it was a losing battle. They employed full time staff to sort out disputes, visit servers, removing structures placed by trolls purely to annoy others. Lots of time and money that could have been spent improving the game, and none of it was effective. Money down the drain.
The people using that argument of "why would you want what ? MM would be bad for the game, think about the trolls", fail to realize that MM would allow BOTH random and friends only.
There is not a single argument that would make MM not worth it. You think MM is bad and you cannot understand why some people would want to play with random ? Fine, make your lobby private/invite only and stick to your friends.
Have no friends playing this game at 3AM ? no problem, join a MM and have some fun.
It's not that hard to understand, at least, if you are not a shills that try so hard to defend your favorite game.
Because let's be real, most of the argumentation thrown here are people trying to literally say that a feature that allow more people to enjoy this game (without negative impact in the way the rest of playerbase play the game) is bad.
As for the other stupid answer like "get friends lul", I consider they are either a troll or just very very limited in brain capacity. Any games/mode that require to having a "friend" at disposal to enjoy online multiplayer is doomed from the get go.
Many "friends" will sometime stop to play the game, will sometime not be available at random hours, or will not sometime want to come play Grounded for 1 hours between work shift etc.....
Now you will say: "well, just find some people on LFG/Discord bro !" Oh yeah, nice idea ! But wait a minute.................................................doesn't this mean I need to search for random players ? you know, like an MM thing would do ? just worst because now I need to spend my time installing stupid apps and basically playing tinder friend simulator for just 1 hour of online play ? Ah yeah, nice solution my friend !
All in all, we have a feature that would allow the online multiplayer part to shine and make this game more popular for many people around the world that is clearly missing, no matter what your argument is, a game that absolutely require to have a friend ready to play to be able to enjoy the online aspect is a game that will always suffer to attract more people, as been shown here, on the discord etc...
I will now stop talking about that (and caring about this game), already 2 years that this issue is here, there is already countless of people and post that complained about the same stupid decision on Halo infinite coop, so it's a subject that already being beaten to death. if Microsoft doesn't care, then we shouldn't care for the game either.
PS: as for the people that ask for proof of the "stipulated back then that Matchmaking would be released later". It's impossible to find it back on google, simply because most of the news/page with promised feature "under work" have been bombarded with each new update, burying the possible result, and from my own research on the discord, it seems a huge part of the discussion on the suggestion thread have been pruned/modified (I think the channel itself have been modified). So feel free to not believe me if you want, after all, I can't and I won't spend hours to find it back, so it's fair.
And yes, I followed the game since the beginning, to a point where I was even in talk with some devs of the game (microsoft side) to fix the issues that prevented Windows 7 users to log in online back then. (sending reports and testing alpha build for fixing the issue in DM)
You can even see some very old post of mine in this steam discussion here too:

So it's not like I'm hating the game, I'm very serious when I say that me and many other people are locked out of the multiplayer part without MM.
I will go back playing Elden Ring, a focused singleplayer game that have Matchmaking that allow me to play online at 4AM for 1 hour without requiring to wake up all my friends.
Oh, and just last thing, about that argumentation of trolls, let's remember that Rust have also coop only server, where your base (TC) have privilege, which mean only those that you allow to have said building privilege can impact your base...... but eh, it's not like it will change anything, right ?
