Story or sandbox?
I'm struggling to find a conclusive answer to this, so thought I'd ask.

Has this game got an actual story to progress through with a defined ending (like say, Subnautica for example) or is it more a sandbox survival game along the lines of Minecraft et al?

on full release later today, it'll have actual Story, and you get stats etc etc once you complete it.

It'll have the full story and ending in the lines of (Subnautica), depending on your timezone the full release of the game will be out today at !8:00 UK time.

It has a full story. Context clues, notes, etc. There are story elements that havent been explicitly stated, but you can read stuff on white boards, or find things in the game that tell stories.
It DOES have a story sequence and guided play, but it is a sandbox. There is no clear follow this path. In fact in some places, you might find yourself building or finding your own path, only to later find a clearly intended path that you missed.
This is the best sandbox since Subnautica, and its probably better.
I have like 30 of these games from Terraria to DayZ and Rust. This is my favorite for so many reasons.

I just got the game a few days ago, how do you play it as a "sandbox"?

I didn't see any option to have all of the things which require unlocking to be available for unlock without doing the story stuff required. There is a custom setting which just unlocks it all for free right from the start, but I'd like to have it require me to actually accumulate the science points to unlock things but not require me to do all the story steps to make them available in the first place.
Or I'm I misunderstanding what that custom setting actually does?

I think sandbox was the wrong word. More "freeform", as in not having a story to follow but it just continuing indefinitely.

If there's no way to skip the story stuff entirely to access all the various aspects of the game, then the correct term would be "Open World", I think. No matter how you slice it at that point, the game isn't a sandbox, it's story-mode only, just with a completely open world (i.e. you aren't on rails). Sandbox elements, sure, but not a true sandbox.

Toggle on that option I mentioned though and it's entirely sandbox....just too easy of one (imo), seeing as you don't have to put in any effort to unlock any technologies.

Yeah, open world means different things to different people. I don't tend to enjoy games where there's no objective other than "survive". Subnautica was perfect because it gave you this huge world to explore, but you always had a reason for actually exploring it.

Based on replies to my question, it seems this is similar in that regards, so I've bought the game now in anticipation of its release later today!

If i complete the story, is it over or can i keep going?

You can play creative mode if you just wanna build stuff, once the game goes to 1.0 it has a ending, im not sure if you complete the game you can then just carry on in your world as I assume the games ending is you getting back to full size again, i also saw on YouTube you get a rating at the end of the game like a score with I assume S being the best, I’m not sure what you have to do in game to improve your scores

I imagine the game can continue on after you finish the story with the explanation being that you repaired the machine (forgot it's name) to return to full size. Which means you can also shrink yourself again to continue your small adventures.

Just guessing though.

No idea yet but we are trying to recover our normal size... so I guess it may be a bit hard to continue.

you get a score rating at the end of the game so i would assume you get big and the game ends giving you a score from S rank down to i guess an F rank, so i would assume you cant carry on playing, but on the other hand when you get to the final part of the game, just dont do it!! till you want the game to end and go about carrying on in the yard!
