Anyone else finding this game really hard?
Even early game.

I've got upgraded acorn armour (+2), I'm beginning to get the hang of perfect parries, using a larva fang (upgraded to +3) but I can still only just about handle an orb weaver jr.

Things like bombardiers or lady bugs take of half my health in a single attack and the bombardiers are especially dangerous since they seem to be able to spew their acid any which way, not just the way they're facing.

Is it just a case of getting better or is there something I'm missing here?

Edit: Solo and normal difficulty.

I found the earliest part of the game quite difficult as well. Things got much easier after I finished the hedge lab and got everything upgraded to tier 2.

Your choice of weapon is probably not helping much, daggers are kinda 'meh' for damage compared to other weapons, from what I've noticed. The poison on that larva dagger doesn't act fast enough for it to make up for the lower damage when you are toe-to-toe with an enemy, imo. Even just the basic Tier 1 axe for chopping grass killed things faster for me.
(Also worth noting that the poison is useless on spiders as they are immune to poison based on what I read).

I used the larva fang dagger too early game, but only against things that ran away when wounded. That way they'd die as they ran so I could be lazy about chasing them.

The game starts off hard for sure, gets easier mid game then gets super impossible hard towards the end, the difficulty spike when you get to the new upper yard is totally over kill

I quickly realized this game is really meant to be a co-op game. It's eveident with the dialogue in the game. When your character says a quip often times if another player is in the game the other character will reply with their own quips. It's a pretty cool system.

Tbh I found a way to exploit to the upper yard before you get the necessary tools to do so using a lean-to, to jump ontop of a rock and then make the jump up.

I found the area only hard until you can craft tier 3 gear where it becomes as easy as the tier 2 content.

The moths wolf spiders black ox beetles roly polys ticks black widows and the 3 boss fights up in that area (may have missed something) it’s super tough unless your an expert at being able to block or your carrying 100 bandages and smoothies

Ranged is less viable than ever so yeah, you can only dark souls parry those enemies. Not amazingly fun, could be better balanced

It's more like finding the next best weapon and armor before you can handle bigger things, Atm i have the musketo blade and am able to kill oreweavers with ease but wolffang still own me till i find better

Hey OP, just a tip because it seems there is no actual hint of this in game: armor sets have set bonuses, i believe the acorn set increases aggro, but also makes it so you're harder to stun.

I have learned the bare minimum previous to playing, I don't touch guides unless I'm completely stuck or clueless how a mechanic works.
I started the game on easy, played through for a dozen hours but things got too easy too fast, so I restarted on regular difficulty. It's tough single player in comparison to most survival games. Most survival games (non pvp) I go ages without dying because I play catious. Grounded I've died multiple times in 30 hrs.

You really have to get in the mindset you are prey, have an escape route planned, and keep your eyes open. Make sure you are paying attention to weaknesses, they mean the difference between poke damage and heavy damage. Stun weapons come in handy as well. Single player I personally don't like the acorn armor because it drains too much stamina, and if you get parry down it's better to have less stamina drain than heavy armor.

It's clearly designed for multiplayer where one player can use stuff like acorn armor and a shield to be a tank while others focus on dps. Without a tank it makes some things are much more challenging.

It's definitely challenging, but a challenge that I'm enjoying. I am playing on Custom difficulty with certain settings adjusted for Quality of Life reasons, but I still deal with the key elements of food/water, aggro bugs, and dropping backpack upon death. The bugs can be pretty difficult if you don't pay attention to the data you get from "Peeping" them, but I've even managed to take out a Ladybug with a tier 1 hammer because it was weak to it.

Things have definitely gotten a bit better since I got tier 2 weapons/tools, though. I play mostly singleplayer, and the struggle is real when you're running around with tier 1 stuff. Upgrading your armor/weapons with the anvil is definitely a must.

First playthrough, yeah it’s hard especially the parry system it’s hard to read the insects attack patterns and get it done in perfect time to parry their attacks and the Wolf Spider is the hardest one to parry among.

But when you get used to it’s actually not that hard, now after a hundreds hours LOL I can parry pretty much of them just fine with a few misses.

The game itself is fun and great IMO but since the full release I can’t play it because of FPS drop, I’ll wait until they fix it to finished the story and grow big again LOL

You were certainly right on this point. I got the ant head club and things have gone a lot easier since then. Wolf spiders are still way out of my league but I've since beaten a couple of ladybugs and even a couple of orb weaver regulars!

yeah my base was just destroyed by ant revenge, its a bit much i dont think im going to keep playing this kind of hindrance is just tedious and annoying
Jaggid Edje Oct 1, 2022 @ 11:49am
What difficulty are you playing on, @Fuzzy? I am on Medium, and had a raid of Orbweaver's yesterday that barely did any structural damage at all. Of course, I was there to defend it....I can see it having been more of an issue if I hadn't returned.

Also, if you switch to custom difficulty, you can turn that mechanic off entirely.

Early game is definitely tough. Here is a little tip with bombadiers. Shields can protect you from their acid spew. Just dont sit in the acid after it hits the ground. Thats what will damage you.
Secondly you can just fight long range with a bow and sprint sideways or jump left or right to avoid their long range acid attack. You can get 2 or 3 arrow shots per acid attack. Bonus points for walking the line between long range and mid range and close range on these beetles. you can telegraph their next attack by their animations before they strike. You can easily sprint backwards to get out of the way of their close range acid attacks. Thankfully most of the areas where these spawn is in a clearing so you are not trying to dodge and get stuck on grass or other terrain.
