I usually build a starting base on top of the base ball and I always make sure to hang out on top of it during those first nights because I always see the wolf spiders pass by within visible distance and if I am building or cutting down grass and such at least one of them will always drop by. The one that usually visits me is the one that lives over near the haze (opposite side of the starting area compared to the oak tree) and it wanders towards the oak tree every evening around or just after sunset. If I'm quiet it just passes by in the distance, but make noise and it's bound to come around - even multiple times if you keep making noise all night.
As for your current predicament...you could try to outrun it - just don't run in a straight line. if you can make it to the baseball and run up the little branch that leads up there you might be able to lose it. Just need it to lose line-of-sight and then be quiet. They can jump however so not sure if the baseball is safe - it is once you have built a floor and one layer of walls on top of it, but it might be able to jump up there when nothing is built.
Now I know not to be so active at night. I had been chopping grass and dandelions after it had gotten dark, and then was in the foundation of my base building when the spider showed up. At that time, the only access to that "under the floor crawlspace" was one missing floor tile above. And the spider was sitting right by that hole. O.O
I built a door into the crawlspace from the outside now, realizing I might need to get under in the future. I also reinforced things so that I feel safe deleting one of the outer walls if I should ever get trapped by a wolf spider camping by that door in the future. With what had just happened, I was afraid to delete a wall to make a different exit because I wasn't sure what all above it that would destroy.
Haha ah lucky! But yeah it can be a good idea to collect resources in the daytime and build/craft/sleep in the safety of your base during the night - at least in the early days. Technically it's possible to take out a wolf spider solely with a few basic axes, but takes practice to avoid it's attacks, time and you'll burn through several basic axes. Personally I don't find it fun (but I'm arachnophobic so I don't need any added challenge lol), but others enjoy that type of challenge. :D
Definitely a good idea with more than one entry point for your base and having it raised off the ground is usually handy. Be aware that ants will come around to steal food from your storages, so don't have them placed next to an outer wall at ground height. At least when I played a few months ago it was still an issue with them being able to steal through the walls at times. And of course if you have base raids enabled (it is by default) bugs will eventually come and attack your base, so there's that to deal with too...
I started a new game with the release, and for my new base I put the food spit and storage in the center, so it is 3 tiles from any exterior wall. I also built it raised up by 1 to 1 1/2 wall tile heights (terrain below is uneven) and then I walled off entirely the lower area which is technically UNDER the base.
That's where I was when the wolf spider showed up, because my base was large enough that I needed more structural support down there.
I've been working on the base and I ended up adding a second exit for the upper level, the real base, as well....given lessons already learned. That second exit takes me up and over to the top of the "cliff" that is next to the mysterious machine. My main entrance takes me out on top of the mysterious machine itself.
"Lessons learned" is a big part of the fun in survival games :D :D :D I think it's an awesome game...despite of me being a bit too much of a scaredy cat for it. And it's just great seeing something else than the usual zombie-game. :) Well hope you'll have lots of fun with your continued adventures!
